Recently I found this Phase 90 emulation:

Can anyone here with a Phase 90 account for its authenticity? I owned one many moons ago, so I can't do a comparison myself...

Does it matter? Do you like it or don't you? :)

If its not, then why should it be called MXR Phase 90, instead of just "a phaser"? Of course it matters!chrishurley wrote:Does it matter? Do you like it or don't you?

Which would only be possible contextually if the emulation were an accurate one.championrabbit wrote:Not if it makes the sounds you are looking for.snooky wrote:it matters...does it matter if a moog emu sonds like a moog?

If he he/she doesn't know what a Phase 90 sounds like then why is he/she worried about the VST's authenticity? Why not give it a listen and simply decide if he/she likes the sound of the VST?Sickle wrote:Which would only be possible contextually if the emulation were an accurate one.championrabbit wrote:Not if it makes the sounds you are looking for.snooky wrote:it matters...does it matter if a moog emu sounds like a moog?

The highest form of knowledge is empathy, for it requires us to suspend our egos and live in another's world. It requires profound, purpose‐larger‐than‐the‐self kind of understanding.

For chrishurley and championrabbit:
Wow. You know, I've been ignoring some of the really obnoxious responses to people's postings because it hadn't happened to me yet.
I used to own a Phase 90 years ago, like I mentioned, for those of you who don't bother reading my question. I miss it a lot. I'm considering going out and buying one.
But, I'm not playing live at this point, I just want it to record. I think that the plugin sounds pretty good, but I'm not sure if I go out and spend $100 on a real phase 90 if I will think "Gee, that plugin did exactly that, I'm not getting any more value for this $100", or "wow, there's the sound I missed, that plugin isn't even as close as the Kjaerhus Classic Phaser".
So, now I join the legions of other KVR-ers to say: If you don't have something helpful to post, then why don't you go look for a thread where your contributions will be appreciated.
Now, again, if anybody who owns a phase 90, either the original script model or the new EVH model, can compare them, I might save $100, or treat myself to the real thing, IF it is indeed better. Capice?

I used to own an original back in the day, soI can understand why you'd want a close match, cause it was a great pedal. I don't use phasers much anymore, so I don't have much to recommend, but check out the Smart Electronixs' Supaphaser, a free one. Also, there's a MuTron emu coming out from Audiodamage, and they're well known for quality emulation of exotic effects, so you might wanna keep your eyes open for that one.

I suspect they simply havent ever used a phase 90.
Watch these same guys reply when a vst called "access virus vsti" comes out then theyre all like "does it sound like the real virus??????"
So, likewise, if you are gonna name a vst MXR Phase 90 then of course people are going to hold it up to the original for comparison.
the phaser in uad-1 Nigel is based on the mutron bi-phase and mxr phase 90, closest ive heard so far but i havent yet heard the topic one.
I would say its pretty lame to give it the name if its not up to the game.

And for everybody else, what is the point of worrying about a Phase 90 plug if it's placed before an amp-sim?
The entire set-up is 'virtual' anyway, so what is the point of this type of discussion?
A 'virtual' Phase 90 placed before a 'virtual' Jazz Chorus? It ain't gonna sound like the real thing.
Worry about what sounds 'good', not what sounds 'real'.

dear antti
exactly how close to the original did you get? Or is this simply an experiment that was named after it because they both do the same thing?
Inquiring minds want to know

none of this was mentioned in the original post. You only mentioned you used to own one and can't do the comparison yourself. You didn't say anything about buying a phase 90.jplanet wrote:For chrishurley and championrabbit:

It wasn't really obnoxious anyway- there was a smiley. I was trying to save you untold headaches and worries if you just wanted a phaser to use since it doesn't really matter whether or not it sounds like a phase 90 if you like how it sounds. You never said you wanted to use it as a benchmark to decide whether or not to buy one.
I'm sure the guy thought it sounded like a phase 90, or was influenced by a phase 90, but to the exact degree when two people compare it, they will likely come away with different opinions.
I've got a phase 90, but setting up an equitable comparison would be a mild headache. Even if I thought it sounded very similar or identical, I'd hate for you to waste $100 if you picked out something you didn't like about it.jplanet wrote: Now, again, if anybody who owns a phase 90, either the original script model or the new EVH model, can compare them, I might save $100, or treat myself to the real thing, IF it is indeed better. If you're in the USA or other areas where Musicians Friend serves, they have them for $70 with a 45 day return policy. I've returned piles of stuff I didn't like and both they and American Musical Supply were very easy to deal with.
