!!!! Warning Newbe Zone !!!!!!

:wink: Hi everyone, this post is really for any newbes starting off on the trail of warmth , warm , tube, saturated plugins. im talking about guitars plugged into computers. 8)

i am really a newbe myself and have spent the last few days trying to get a tube sound from freeware plugins, with a vst host.

i wuz going to start a post about "your worst moment with an effect plugin" but i can leave that for later :hihi: like the time i put a warezd effects plug into someones mixing studio (computer) and yes, it stuffed it up. :(
the computer could go into a mastering stage but the guy couldn't play any instruments, through the software he had. anyway enough! moving on........

im really only posting here to say three things.
1) sadly :cry: its most likely (very) true you cant get an authentic tube sound, with freeware, but you can get a sound that you can be extremely happy with. after playing around for many days with most of the freeware warming/tube vst plugins you can get on the net , here is a short mp3 of the 'sound' im happy with.
please download if ya want:

http://h1.ripway.com/jackrabbit/fell.mp3

if you have GOT a way to get a real tube sound, with freeware please post a mp3 so we can listen.
2) supposing like me you do get a sound you really like, which in my case took ages. then what!!!!!!!
you cant really just 'dial' the next preset. are you going to spend another few days, getting another sound you want. :lol:
3) its very old, but i did find a link to a really interest article for newbes like myself on tube warmth plugins. thats not to say i didnt get
90% of help from this forum (thanks heaps kvr guys)
it may not seem all relevent, but here is the link.

Oh, man, you said the "w" word... there goes the signal:noise ratio -- right from the get-go!

Warez are bad, man, really bad... teh 5ux0r.

Anyway, I used to use Ruby Tube and Dominion all over, but lately I'm using SweetyVST instead -- and saving up my pennies for Warmifier and/or Crunchessor.

For guitar, Simulanalog's JCM900 is unbelievably great, even for clean tones. I also like the clean channel of BTE's Juicy77. I usually use my Guitar Port on the rare occasions when I require high gain.

Anyway, maybe we'll get some content out of this thread!

From the context, it looks to me as if Monsieur Splat has learned that lesson the hard way. :-D There's no teacher like experience, and no school like Hart-Knox.

Jack, howdy. Assuming you're now staying clear of warez, welcome to KVR.

I agree, you can't get an authentic tube sound. :D

It doesn't sound like you've used a guitar processor here, though I could be wrong. That's your first mistake I'd say. You need to use an amp sim, not a tube sim. Tube sims are designed to add some tube console colour in most cases, not to give you an overdriven guitar sound!

Although the SNR is kind of pooched here, that's actually kind of an interesting sound. What did you use?

Re: the posted clip

Yeah, it's a cool tone. You can get similar results by overdriving several instances of Ruby Tube or Antares Tube. I usually get it by forgetting to adjust the levels on my TubePre. :hihi:

That's a little bright for my tastes....is there a cabinet emulator of any sort on there?

Try mda Combo- does 1x8", 1x12", 4x12", and it will definitely take off the brightness.

Except too much in a studio :) i.e feedback :D

No i dont use warez !!!!!!!!

it was years ago, and it cost me a friendship. with the guy who owned the equipment. so i did learn a big lesson. warez suckS !!!!!!! :shock:
appreciate the lack of :x flaming :x so far.cheers

also appreciate all the replies and i will try the suggestions mentioned. i'm one of these people who really has to save hard for equipment, as my income is too limited. so im thinking of getting a vamp2, but i digress.

it was a tiny bit frustrating trying to get a tube sound, because something would go right, and then other parts of the sound would not be right. i would describe the experience like making a fancy cake with icing. just when you add the icing, the cake caves in. however the cabinet settings from mda would be worth a big try. thanks. plus Dominion sounds like an interesting suggestion.

i did use an amp sim for the sound, here is a list of vst's i used in order for the sound.
PreAMP_TGR-18--->Helian_FU22--->LFX-1310--->ColorTone FREE 1.0--->continued below->
mdrive--->DS GE1--->GreenGate--->TLs-Pocket_Limiter

i will give a better description of the vst's a bit later. thanks for the welcome to KVR................ :)
