Muted snare sound?

I'm particularly fond of that sound but I haven't found any samples yet (let alone at diff velocities).

I'm talking The Eagles ca 1979 or certain Funk/Disco classics

All the snare samples I found on the net have that "ringing" sound (you can almost put a musical note to it).

I'm starting to believe the muted snare sound died with the advent of Drum machines

I don't think there's a way to achieve that muted sound with EQing etc, and you can't just go and sellotape toilet paper to a wav-file

I tried sampling my own snare with a Shure 58 (with sub-optimal results).

Can anyone point me to some samples?
