One of the best (Multiband)Compressors I have.
A must have (especially for mastering) !
Maybe a bit confusing for the first time, but hey, it has 32 bands with controls and analyzers for each band.
If you understand the concept (read manual!) then it's not so difficult.
Best to try it. Start with the presets and adjust the threshold to your needs.

I view Soniformer as a more specialized tool than an everyday compressor. I use it now and then but when I need it it is totally irreplaceable. You can do things with Soniformer that no other plugin that I know could do.
In fact I love Voxengo plugins - the guy is a genius (an overused word, I think, but Aleksey deserves it IMO). The plugins are brilliant and affordable, customer service is superb, the developer listen to his customers. Even if Soniformer is not exactly what you need, you should look at the other Voxengo plugins (in case you haven't yet).

I'm thinking about using it for achieveing commercial CD loudness. That Soniformer could allow Elephant2 to work alot less. What do you think about Soniformer for this purpose?

Soniformer is a brilliant multiband mastering compressor. Absolute overkill for track compression, but is capable of anything from very subtle compression all the way to unbelievable squashing. I don't know of any other multiband compressor, software or hardware, that offers as many bands or as much control. It does require a learning curve, however ...

sorry to muddle things, but I checked the website: d/l'ing demo now, but I was under the imporession that it was a multi-band compressor, but not one that the user fiddles with much: pop it on top of a song and it adjusts levels to match the "smooth curve" mentioned in the ad. Are people using it as a multi-band like anymulti band or... sorry to be dumb, here.

I ask because my compressionb skills have never been that good; I just EQ everything. The thought of a plug that would "dial itself" into the "optimal curve" without needing me to be an excellent compressor-user seemed nice.

It actually has one knob called "input slope" that is kind of a go-to "dial". I usually start with a preset and tweak that knob, since it will weight the comp curve to bass, mid, or highs. I would be hard pressed to build a preset from scratch on this thing, though. Maybe someday.ouroboros wrote:yes.

Hi, I'm new to the forum. Just wondering if you have used Har-bal and how it compares to Soniformer. My application would be for pre-mastering and improving existing mixes. I seen some posts where Har-bal is the favourite but I don't think the users have used Voxengo's products for mastering. Anyways your thoughts are welcome here.
Cheers,
Rick

Har-bal is a parametric EQ (and a very good one at that), while Soniformer is a multiband compressor... Har-bal is great for leveling out peaks'n'valleys, while Soniformer is great for achieving that overall sonic balance across the spectrum.
Hope that helps.
