midi problems in cubase sx 3

Hi- I bought my first midi keyboard today and have been playing around in cubase. It sounds fine live- with the cubase metronome and a low buffer setting etc I can play perfectly in time- but when I record the notes on the midi track and play them back they have moved back a notch. I have been watching as I am recording and whenever I hit a note cubase puts it on the roll half a step back. I can;t find anything in the manual about this and it's very frustrating.

Try this:

1. Update your Cubase SX3 to the latest Version 3.1.0.933!

2. Before you record your Midi track, be sure that you DON`T have select 'All MIDI Inputs' as Midi In Device! Only select as Midi In that Midi Interface wich you play.

Hope it help.

So can anyone else shed a little light on this?

you have to get rid of the emulated midi-in drivers, check the steinberg forum...
Jelmer was here...

There was a similar problem with Ableton Live, midi notes monitoring ok, but being dropped in late.
It was narrowed down to a PDC issue (as the lateness pretty much equated to whatever the input+output latency was) & seems to be fixed in the final 5.03 release.
Maybe the steinberg bug is something similar, a PDC issue of some sort.
These are two of the threads on the ableton forum exploring this issue:

Yes but in my case they are being dropped in early. Are you telling me that noone else has this problem?

In the 'Midi port enabler' directory (Under the \program files\Cubase SX3 directory by default) there is a PDF explaining the 'ignoreportfiler' function, Midi drivers and so on.

Windows can provide DirectMusic and WIndows Midi drivers. Each can also provide a system timestamp.

With early Midi notes the problem can be that the system provides SX with the incoming Midi information, but it appears early to SX, so it places the events early.

By choosing the input (DM or WIndows Midi) for a specific interface, the 'use system timestamp' flag can be checked in device setup.

Run through the suggested setup in the pdf, and see which port works on your system.

I have built many machines around SX, and the Midi interfaces have all worked with one or other of the drivers, even if one of them gave early midi notes.

I have done so- and cannot disable any emulated drivers. I have used the ignoreportfilter function using copy and paste to no avail. No extra midi devices are in the window- and all the ones in there except for the one that I am using all say No No and No and I cannot change this information.

What are the inputs called:

a) for Direct Music.
b) For WIndows Midi.

There are active and show columns for the drivers, clicking on the show column to make it YES has worked with every machine I have worked with. The Active column is read only, and shows ports that are active in SX.

Also have you tried clicking on the use system timestamp checkbox for the Windows Midi or Direct Music?

You may have inadvertently said "copy and paste." It should be "*cut* and paste." You need to move it out of the folder. :)

Well there are no cards listed under direct music. I am not sure why. The box is empty. In windows music there are nine giga inputs that have No No and No, a windows one that says no no and no. And my usb one that says yes and yes. My usb one is the only one that is an "in"
