What's the tiniest ReWire host you know of?

I'm using FL Studio together with Reason. The problem is that I can't use the play controls of Reason when rewired with FL Studio. So, I'm thinking: Is there a tiny ReWire host application which lets me host FL Studio AND Reason from it.

In Reason, did you try switching on the little "MIDI and "Play" buttons in the "MIDI Sync/Focus" box at the bottom of the screen?
As to why you think that using a third host will somehow miraculously engage MIDI sync is beyond me. Sometimes reading the manual is a better alternative than seeking absurd solutions to problems that don't really exist.

It's about rewire, not MIDI. the problem is that with the current implementation of Rewire in FL Studio you can't use the play controls of Reason! It has nothing to do with MIDI. Pressing play or stop in Reason does nothing. So I'm thinking that it may be useful to use a third ReWire host who allows those features.

Rewire does indeed send and receive MIDI data. Did you even try what I recommended?bassport wrote:It's about rewire, not MIDI. the problem is that with the current implementation of Rewire in FL Studio you can't use the play controls of Reason!
The problem is not with FL Studio or Reason. FL Studio definitely sends MIDI start/stop messages via Rewire.

So, what can ReWire do?
ReWire has the following features:
- Real-time streaming of up to 256 individual audio channels (up to 64 with ReWire 1) from one application to another.
- Real-time streaming of up to 4080 individual MIDI channels from one application to another (255 MIDI buses with 16 channel per bus). This feature requires ReWire 2.
- High-precision synchronization - complete, glitch-free sync between the two applications, with no settings to make and no parameters to worry about.
- Common transport functions - if both applications have built-in sequencers of some sort, you can play, stop, rewind etc. in any of the applications and they will both locate to the same position.
- Additional querying - one application can "ask" the other about audio channel names, etc. This feature requires ReWire 2.

@ john
Do you propose to hook them up via MIDI sync or what do you mean? MIDI sync wouldn't help either because the slave can't start / stop either.
I looked in the FL forums and there are other people with the same problem. And the FL makers say explicitely that it's not possible because it is a function which is not implemented in the Rewire plugin.
@ arke: I wouldn't want to Daisychain the programs. I would use the tiny Rewire host as master and both the other proggies as slaves.
Yup, I tried it and nothing changed. I still couldn't start / stop within Reason.John Vulich wrote: Rewire does indeed send and receive MIDI data. Did you even try what I recommended?
You still don't get it. The problem is that Reason doesn't send any messages or that the Rewire plugin from FL studio can't receive those messages. The problem is not with FL Studio or Reason. FL Studio definitely sends MIDI start/stop messages via Rewire.![]()

bassport, So far I have seen it only works in Cubase/Nuendo with Reason rewired the way you want it.Transport works on both programs. Haven't tried with Sonar so cant comment on that.

Of course it also works nicely with Live 5, though that's not really tiny. I'm pretty sure, Tracktion 1 will do the trick as well (is it still available for free?).bassport wrote:I'm using FL Studio together with Reason. I dont think any tiny(less than 10mb?) rewire host exists
I would like to know one

Indeed! From the Plogue Bidule Help:aMUSEd wrote:Plogue Bidule
ReWire Sync
When Bidule is in ReWire master mode, most ReWire devices will be able to act as either Master or Slave sync interfaces. This means that they can be slave or master to other devices, other bidules (like the Audio File Looper), and VST plugins requiring sync (timing) information. Starting play in the slaved ReWire application will start play for all items synched to the ReWire bidule. If the ReWire device is synched to a master in Bidule, then its playing will not start until the tempo master in Bidule gets started.
When Bidule is in ReWire slave mode, the ReWire device can only act as a tempo master. Bidule still can, of course, contain other indepenedent sync masters in addition to the ReWire device.

Yes, but then you couldn't send notes and automation from FL Studio to Reason anymore.bassport wrote:@ arke: I wouldn't want to Daisychain the programs. I would use the tiny Rewire host as master and both the other proggies as slaves.

I think I'll go with that one. I bought Tracktion 1 when it came out. Just didn't use it that often.play wrote:I'm pretty sure, Tracktion 1 will do the trick as well (is it still available for free?).

Well, it worked. I upgraded to Tracktion 2. I rewire now FL Studio and Reason to Tracktion. Only problem: I can't use the controls of FL Studio.
FL Studio seems to have a pretty bad implementation of Rewire.
On the other hand: Tracktion 2 still doesn't play the first note after you've hit play. It seems that nobody got the Rewire implementation right.
