I've read about this Cubase SX feature and seems interesting.
anyone use it here? how does it work? problems (timing, ...)? basically it transforms any external synth into vst, I assume?
thx

Love it. One of the best new features Steinberg has come up with for ages
You need a separate input for each physical synth. latency isn't much of an issue if you keep your buffer sizes low thanks to the PDC, which works really well. Its great being able to treat external synths in exactly the same manner as vsti. It even freezes them nicely

the external instruments feature in cubase is amazing
if you have a full implemented device panel for the external synth, you can edit the whole hardware with the panel (and save the preset in cubase)and save all within your project.
so the external hardware acts like a real vsti
the only thing i miss is that the device panels do not receive midi messages from the external synth (if you tweak a knob on the external synth)
but i hope this will be a feature in sx4

Sadly, I still can't find any for CS1x, RM1x, SC-88 etc, just the Prophecy.
If anyone knows of any, I'd be most appreciative

Podium? I never paid attentio to it. really has that function?
I cannot afford myself to buy Cubase SX actually, but that feature is really interesting.

I was already doing so, thanks!
But I have some doubts. When you're using your hardware synth with a devide definition, do you have to bounce into wav or it's recognised as a vst?
I've read that only one devide definition can work at the same time with your synth and so you have to freeze in order to be able to open another one; so far so good. But I just read that you can later 'rebounce' them to make further changes. but how does the synth recognise the frozen and now defrozen sound if you're using another sound now, since you opened more device definitions?

Very interesting - I was actually getting interested in SX after hearing about this feature as I think I should be able to run all my Scope plugins this way without having to use XTC mode (in theory anyway). Only problem was without a demo its hard to know for certain if it would work and I can't seem to find any decent information about how you would set it up (details like routings, midi etc) - and at the price SX is I'm reluctant to just jump in on the basis of a possibility.
So if podium can do it too that's a lot cheaper

Hi,
Btw. a new Podium demo version is being uploaded within a day or two, in case you want to try it out.

You only have to create bounce tracks if you are using your synth on multiple tracks. When you're using your hardware synth with a devide definition, do you have to bounce into wav or it's recognised as a vst?
When a synth track is bounced, the original tracks are still present (but muted as long as the bounce track is active). So when you turn bounce mode off, the preset assigned to the now unmuted synth track will be recalled in the synth. Take a look at the 'external hardware' video found at the bottom of the home page on zynewave.com.I've read that only one devide definition can work at the same time with your synth and so you have to freeze in order to be able to open another one; so far so good.
