VST to RTAS and PROTEUS X

I bought a VST to RTAS Adapter so I could play my Proteus X (EMU 0404 soundcard and software) through Pro Tools on my Spectral RM7000 computer.
It has been a total disaster.
My Pro Tools MIDI tracks no longer have the output choices they did before. The old assignments are saved in italics (inactive) and they don't apear on the drop-down menu as a possible selection.
I can't even get the Proteus X software to load a preset or bank while in stand-alone mode. The directory branches are empty!
The sound banks were loaded from disk, but not to the place where the adapter looked for them. I still haven't found where they are in my computer. Anybody know the suffix of those files, so I can do a search?
I had to luck out with somebody at the Digidesign forum to find out that I had to put a copy of my ProteusX.dll file into a vstplugins folder for the adapter to deal with it.
That's just one of the many things missing from the information a citizen needs to get the thing to work.
But anyway, let me start at the beginning (of the VST to RTAS wrapper problem).
The first time I ran it, I was presented with a list of "host" applications for the adapter to work with. I noticed it allowed only ONE selection, so I chose Digidesign.
Now, since NONE of the things are working together, and the setup seems to be crippling Pro Tools, I am wondering if I should have chosen a different company name from the list. Steinberg, for example, since the sounds were VST. Or EMU, or Creative Solutions (I don't even remember if they were on the list).
Can anybody tell me what that list is supposed to do as far as linking what with what?
AND WHAT SHOULD I HAVE CHOSEN?
On the back of the fxpansion booklet was the address of this forum for support.
But I guess there is no support team, just the folks here at the forum.
Right?

Hi, jlsii, and welcome to KVR. Sorry you're having a problem with this. There is actually a very healthy and busy forum for FXpansion, with constant monitoring and replies by their support staff.
You might want to post your issue here: http://www.kvraudio.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=13
Take care,
GreyLion

Hope it works out easily for you, since I'm waiting for the next version of the VST2RTAS wrapper myself, for my brand-new M-Powereed 7.
You do know that there are Issues with the earlier version of the wrapper when applied to any version 7 of PT, yes? If you haven't heard about this, and you're running PT7, you might read through the FXPansion support thread here: http://www.kvraudio.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=111545
They've been cautious about getting it out the door, wanting it to be right and non-buggy when it ships.
If you're running an earlier version of PT, it should be fine.
They might be a bit slow replying tonight, as I surmise that most, if not all, spent the week at NAMM. On the other hand, they can be startlingly quick on occasion.
But my experience is that they *will* sort you out sooner or later. They're good folks.
Take care,
GreyLion

I went to that page but there was no discussion about Proteus X.GreyLion wrote:Hi, jlsii, and welcome to KVR. Sorry you're having a problem with this. There is actually a very healthy and busy forum for FXpansion, with constant monitoring and replies by their support staff.

The FXpansion thread was a bunch of emails about "wish I could go to the NAMM and see the ABZ" and "What's the new JXW like?"
Thanks anyway.

Sure! Start a thread. That's what it's all about. They won't know you have a problem unless you tell them.
Ahh, I just hit their forum and see that you've done so. Hope it works out. Patience pays off in these trouble-shooting processes...

No, I found some messages by others and jumped in using a reply with a quote or not. I haven't started a new subject. I wonder what to call the thread.GreyLion wrote:Sure! Start a thread. That's what it's all about. They won't know you have a problem unless you tell them.

Do you use Proteus X, VST to RTAS wrapper and Pro Tools? If so, the audio track INPUT assignment...what would it be? Just recently a new choice called preset has appeared in the list, although it is grayed out.
I was thinking that if I could click on THAT (if it were not grayed out) then the voices from Proteus X would be routed to my track input without using two patch cords from the card to the DIGI 002 mixer. Any thoughts (please!) on this?
After all, assigning the track INPUT as those from the card does not work today, like yesterday. I get nothing in my headphones.
This has been a miserable three weeks trying to get a working MIDI setup ever since I got the ProteusX home and opened it. When will it ever begin to be a useful musical instrument?
Moan.

Sorry, but I'm still waiting on my copy of the VST2RTAS adapter, so don't have any direct knowledge of its installation procedure. It does look like Angus and mm are working through this with you, though. I know how frustrating it can be. It's often just a process of trying things until you find the one that works...

Hey GreyLion, MMFX said you should check out the thread I started and you would be of the opinion that I have been abusive with my responses to their confused support attempts.GreyLion wrote:Hi, jlsii, and welcome to KVR. The thread is called Pro Tools and Proteus X.
In it I finally discovered I need three tracks (MIDI, AUX, and Audio), not two (MIDI and Audio) to get the sound of my keyboard recorded onto an audio track.
Did you know that?

Hey, jlsii --
I'm enough of a newb where ProTools and the wrapper are concerned, that I'd be useless about anything technical that you've run into.
And I wish you well with this. But --
Your on-line persona here comes across, to me, as being past frustration and into anger. I don't fully understand the problems you've had with PT, emu, etc, so can't speak to how justified your feelings might be.
But it looks like a lot of people, both forum members here, and the FXpansion staff, put a fair amount of effort into trying to help you out with something that, as far as I can tell, ultimately had little to do with the FXPansion product. And I have the impression that your difficulty eventually did get solved. Perhaps that could have been accomplished with less acrimony?
There might have been a time, after the wrapper issue was sorted out, to look in other places for support with other issues. Maybe even the Hosts forum here. I know exactly how maddening it can be when you're trying to figure out multiple overlapping issues, and multiple vendors are involved. I do tech support for about 200 people and multiple networks, for a living.
And I've gotten angry about it on occasion. But I've also found that getting angry with the vendors, or anybody else involved in the process, is counter-productive. These guys are our allies! They're trying to make it work for us, and sometimes our problems are genuinely difficult for them also, or genuinely beyond their capacity to help.
As an aside, I find myself able to lay down audio tracks effortlessly in M-Powered, and it just feels right to me. But the MIDI side is still a work in progress for me. For instance, I've just gotten into Aux tracks, and an RTAS instrument that sounds fine on an Instrument track, is almost inaudible on an AUX track. Right now, I'm pretty sure that's my fault.
I, also, printed out the DIGI user manual. It's huge and interesting, but too much for me to gulp down when trying to figure PT out. So I also bought a couple of books from Amazon, and am working my way through them.
My usual method is this: If I'm having a problem and really, really can't figure it out, after lotsa reading and googling, I post a question or send off an e-mail or call the vendor's support. 98% of the time, the problem is the result of my imperfect understanding.
Sometimes the hardware or software is just subtly or obviously broken. Then I get annoyed. With software, and some hardware, it's usually an issue with an x.0 release version. My experience on the forums here is that problems like that surface VERY quickly by multiple reports from many users.
I have the impression, and it's only an impression, that you were going to have a hard time getting this where you need it to be, because maybe you hadn't yet learned enough about the various pieces of the puzzle, to be able to get a clear enough idea about where the 'brokenness' might lie. And then you got mad at people for not knowing it, either.
Take what you need from this, and I hope KVR works out for you. I lurked here for much of a year before my first posting, just so I had a good idea of what I was doing. I don't think you had that luxury, with your system being broken.
The support people here generally work HARD to take care of you, in my humble opinion. I find KVR a warm and interesting community, and an invaluable resource. But you gotta not take it personally, maybe step back until you're feeling smoother, when things get crunchy.
Take care,
GreyLion

Thanks for your cordiality.
There is something very strange about this forum.
I reckon we could swap lemon merangue pie recipies, and you could suggest modifications like nutmeg, and none of the forum police would swoop down and try to put a stop to it.
Just yesterday, clicking around in here, I happened across some guys discussing their LSD history with a beginner.
Why was it that when I started the Pro Tools and Proteus X thread, that I immediately got the news that I might want to think about spending thousands of dollars and going to school to learn Pro Tools instead of irritating people who weren't into this problem and that this was not the place to do that.
And after I asked him (them) to let me just put the problem up for public contributions, they seemed to redouble their efforts to end the discussion.
I just can't understand why they would act that way, unless there is a casual section for discussing LSD dosages and whatever you want, and I should have started my Pro Tools thread in that section, instead of blundering into a software-bug section, where I actually, really should not have posted it.
Is that what happened?
