Reason as a ROMpler

Personally, having played with the Reason demo, I can't say that I would ever purchase Reason, if it were not able to be rewired. I don't like the sequencer. But I know there's plenty of people that use Reason rewired to another host.
I wonder what your opinions are of Reason as a primary sound source, both for acoustic/real instruments, as well as synth sounds. Would it be worth the money in that regard, or is one better off going for a sound library/ROMpler VST? I know this is subjective - that's ok - that's why I'm asking...

Well, lemme say that Reason has the single best collection of sounds and presets I have come across. Theres pretty much anything there ... and if its not, you'll find it free or cheap on the net.
The sequencer is much nicer than it seems initially. You just have to get used to it.

But you yourself don't use it, no? I don't see it in your list of goodies...

It's not going to feel like a rompler but it's a grand storehouse of sound-making gizzies. As arke says the sound libraries provided with it are better than ever. And though I use lots of VSTs, short of complex modulars I know of nothing else with the flexibility of signal routing that Reason has.
If you love to tinker and enjoy variety, it would be hard to beat Reason. If you prefer to grab a sound and run, a VST rompler might be a better way to go. But even then Reason can be a contendah -- just takes another step or two to weld things together.

Personally. I think that if you're going to spend that amount of money on Reason just to use it as a ROMpler, you'd probably be better off spending the cash on some dedicated VSTi's. That kind of money can get you some pretty awesome stuff.
Reason is great. I love it to bits, but it's so much more than a sound source. Yup, the sequencer, compared to stand alone sequencers, is simple but it is effective. I just find that I can fire up Reason and within seconds I'm groovin'. It's my main sketch pad and I often create stuff on there and then, if needs be, move on to Cubase. As arke says, the sounds you get in Reason and the ones you can get for free from the net are outstanding.
I just feel your money would be better spent on good VSTi's rather than on something you wouldn't be using to the full.
Just my opinion

I never thought I'd buy it either, but when the props put ReBirth to bed- they put together a deal that was hard to resist...I got gig'd (for about 1/2 price as I was an EARLY adopter of ReBirth...) can't say I've ever used the Reason sequencer for very much and I WISH that Reason could be used as an fx path thru rewire...such as it is- there are some fantastic things that can be done with some of the tools in the Reason box.
If you run across a good deal- snag it- like Meffy says- it's not much work to hook'em all up via rewire...

I got Reason as a gift, but I never use it. I played around with it for a few days, tried to come up with stuff, but it didn't really work for me. Reason comes with some good sounds, but if you're just looking for a sound module, try Ravity or Wusikstation. What I didn't like about Reason's sounds (especially the Orkester ROM) was that they didn't mix that well when put together in a song.
If all you're looking for is a workhorse sound module, I can't recommend Luxonix Ravity enough. It's super easy on your CPU, sounds great, and is very flexible.

I did exactly that on a track that I have (it's on the Katrina Relief CD). The opening fat synth is using effects (tap delay in particular) from Reason - rewired from Live 4 directly to the FX units (no Reason mixer).blortblort wrote:I WISH that Reason could be used as an fx path thru rewire...such as it is- there are some fantastic things that can be done with some of the tools in the Reason box.
But it is an expensive FX machine so I sold it.

Would you like to get rid of Reason? I might have something to exchange too
The reason I don't have Reason (pun not intended) is because it costs so damn much... but I've played with it extensively.

Sorry, man. It was from a close family friend who I'll never see again, so it's not for sale.arke wrote:Oooh!Ildon wrote:I got Reason as a gift, but I never use it. yeah, I've tried Orion (think it's great, but it crashes on my machine over and over again)
and I own Cubase SX 3 if I need to record vocals...
but I just love Reason... it and me simply fit...
I agree with some of the other people that if you just need a ROMpler, then there are much better options, but if you also want to practice learning some basic synthesis, then you can do that too... and there's TONS of weird routing you can do, like a modular synth... so while it may not be everyone's cup of tea, it's a good starter, it seems to me, as it's got a little bit of everything...
and for me, it's my main sequencer too... I write mainly ambient stuff... and can't wait for the Miroslav String Refills... yay!
but I sure do wish I could get Orion working okay... the few times I've had it up and running I really enjoyed how quickly I could put songs together with it... I don't know if it's my sound card (tried three different ones) or what... but every version from 5.0 on up has crashed after just a few minutes while Reason has never crashed on me once... NEVER, and I've been using it since version 1.0
