hi
now that ive got myself a free VST sample player i want to play clean guitar samples thro it in cubase and add guitar effects (distortion etc)....
any ideas if this can be done, if so how??
also where can i get some good free VST guitar effects from that will do the job

Check the archives here for freeware - then whatever you're after (Chorus, delay, flanger, distortion, etc) 
The Classic Series by kjaerhus are worth searching for, as are the Simulanalog plugs. Also the MDA collection are a good starting place (see the smartelectronix website). Notice, no links, since searching will uncover more possibilities for you
I don't know what sample player you are using, but getting hold of sfz from www.rgcaudio.com and some sf2 files (soundfonts) from www.hammersound.com or www.soundfonts.it can widen your scope dramatically.
