Cubase should do this (sampling)

I was perusing through the latest KvR news, and spotted Nanosynth (included with MOTU's Digital Performer). From what the blurb says, you can drag and drop any audio clip from anywhere within the host into the sampler for more controllable mangling.
I rarely get bothered about things SX misses, as TBH, it does things that I'll probably never even get around to trying. It does almost all of what I could want in a host.
But the drag and drop sampler thing - It must have caught my attention without realising - I sat and thought about that for quite a while. It's the one main thing that SX really lacks IMO - a sampler (I don't call that GM thingy a sampler...) More than that, a sampler dedicated to working within SX. It'd be great for workflow to be able to select any audio clip within a part and simply drag it into a sampler...no rebouncing, rerendering, exporting etc. Because it's designed specifically for the host - you could have it so that it automatically truncates any audio .wav it sees selected as a clip in any part (editos included) at the start and end points that you've used.
I suppose it would be similar to freezing - only a rather larger macro that recognises start point, end point, audio editing parameters, part parameters etc etc etc and bounces as a .wav - or would it even need to bounce as a .wav? Couldn't it just feed a selected portion of a .wav into the sampler?
It's not enough to make me leave SX to go over to Digital Performer...but it's a rather nice feature if it was implemented fully. It's something I might be bothered to get off my arse and write to Steinberg over - a polite suggestion as a new feature for SX4.
I dunno...waddaya think?

i concur ,it would be great to have this sort of function and include only simple envelope and modulation options to keep cpu load down.
I imagine this is a bit like "simpler" in Ableton Live?
You can always load stuff into a more complex beast for mangling etc

Ableton does this? Hmmmm...it seems a few people use Ableton for the individual audio stuff, plus a main host for the real sequencing duties. I might have to look into it...
You can Rewire Ableton into SX?

Yes you can.kritikon wrote:Ableton does this? Hmmmm...it seems a few people use Ableton for the individual audio stuff, plus a main host for the real sequencing duties. I might have to look into it...

I'd love this feature too, btw.

well this is exactly what you can do with halion. drag drop.
i would like sx to have a 'sampler track' though, as well as 'vsti track' and 'drum track', but they're another story.
i envisage the sampler track functioning in 2 modes, one for melodyne style key editor and time stretching, and secondly for simple resampling.

Yeah, but can you do it with clips rather than just with complete .wavs? Can you edit out a single snare in a whole loop, move it down to a 2nd lane, in a part, without rendering it separately, and drop it into Halion?

if you are smart then yes.kritikon wrote:Yeah, but can you do it with clips rather than just with complete .wavs? Can you edit out a single snare in a whole loop, move it down to a 2nd lane, in a part, without rendering it separately, and drop it into Halion?
cut the audio to whatever you want on the arrange page, then 'minimise' (create new version in pool from segmant of other file) via the menu command, finally drag to halion.

Close, but...martian wrote:if you are smart then yes.kritikon wrote:Yeah, but can you do it with clips rather than just with complete .wavs? Can you edit out a single snare in a whole loop, move it down to a 2nd lane, in a part, without rendering it separately, and drop it into Halion?

tbh i think the biggest improvement would be to negate the necessity for a sampler in the first place. in should be built into the architecture.
they could start by adding 'replace audio' in the pool too. it being one of the main advantages of using midi for drums, you dont have to remap the events everytime you want to change a sample.

Actually, thats not true.martian wrote:if you are smart then yes.kritikon wrote:Yeah, but can you do it with clips rather than just with complete .wavs? Can you edit out a single snare in a whole loop, move it down to a 2nd lane, in a part, without rendering it separately, and drop it into Halion?

If you d&d a clip to Halion, Halion will load the entire wav, but use the clip info to set Start and End points for the sample (at least Halion3 does, I couldn't test previous versions). So you don't really need to bounce down first, unless you're short on RAM.
Also, ShortCircuit has the exact same functionality, and its pretty tight on CPU, and it even uses the same colours as SX3 - so it feels like its part of the sequencer

^^
yes, sorry i just realised it does use the start and end points, been using k2 for a while now. anyway, it works in hal 2 and sx2 too, in fact i think it has since v1 of both.

Ahhhhh! I didn't realise Shortcircuit does that. Interestinger and inerestinger. It's not quite what I'd want if it uses the start and end points of the clip on the whole .wav though - it means if you fiddle with the end point for stuttering or flams etc, unless you save the original, or make note of it - you could easily lose the original end point and have to start all over again.

Yeah...I always thought the bounce/replace options in SX were a bit too limiting. I toyed with bouncing in the Pool - it's already limited by the fact you need to be in the Pool to start with to bounce a clip of a .wav to a separate .wav - it all just seems a bit tortuous. (At least in SX2 anyways). I'm sure I remember in VST5.1 that I could simply click on "replace" or somesuch to save to a separate .wav but whilst in the part editor (which is where I do most of my audio work...I almost always "Event to part" with any audio) It always seemed a bit quicker and more intuitive within VST.they could start by adding 'replace audio' in the pool too. it being one of the main advantages of using midi for drums, you dont have to remap the events everytime you want to change a sample.

Erm, you don't need to be in the pool to bounce a clip, just highlight the clip in the arrange window or part editor, and select 'Bounce Selection' from the audio menu. Infact, just assign it to a key command and make it even easier.

You sure? I remember reading in the manual that you're supposed to be in the pool for that.
I know you can bounce whole parts in the arrange window.
Could be I changed some of the settings though - first time I got SX, I changed it to VST behaviour and alot of what the manual said didn't work. I changed it back since, so maybe I just never tried doing things that I thought I could do afterwards. I must give it a go - it'd sure save me some time. Last time I tried bouncing any clip from the arrange window, it came up with some window about setting the audio folder...every time I do it - even though I've already got an audio folder set up. I ended up with folders within folders within folders...

Yeah i'm sure. I do it all the time before dragging to ShortCircuit.
