After all the bugginess of Acid5, I was wondering how people have been handling Sound Forge8. I have a much older Sound Forge (5) and have been thinking of updating...just wanted to see whether it's working better than its sibling. Thanks!

I have not had any problems with SF8. I also upgraded from 5. If you want to save some $ though and you registered SF5...When Sony bought SF they stopped supporting SF5 and released SF6. I was given SF6 as a free update in downloadable form when I wrote support and asked what happened to the SF5 updates from their web page :)

Eight is ok on windows XP here for me. – I use it along side wavelab, and both seem as stable as each other, and so far this has proved pretty glitch free.

I like it. I had some issues with it crashing on startup while scanning my VST folder, but a cleanup to that (My VST folder's under 150 items these days; it used to be over 400   ) helped a lot.

I hadn't updated from 5 either, but with CD Architect included and with the native VST support it's had for a while, I decided it was time. Plus, I got in on the $99 upgrade deal :)

Soundforge is the only thing I miss on the Mac - there is *still* not a decent wave editor that's comparable after all this time. Soundforge rocks.

8 works fine for me as well...wish the product was not in Sony's camp, but Soundforge doesn't seem to have been as adversely affected by the Sonic Foundry sell off as ACID appears to have been...Ive not used ACID since v4...and it was a Sonic Foundry product when I made the switch to Live. For what it's worth- I've not had any real trouble out of Live 5 either...(you go to the forums for either ACID or LIVE and the respective users make both of sound like they're worst products on the face of the earth. truth be told- whenever your stuff isn't working- it sucks, regardless of the real reasons :P )

ew: Under 150... over 400?!?! *jawdrop*

thanks, y'all...seems worth it...boy, though, am I trigger shy after Acid5. Whew!

SF8 is working well for me: I really like being able to use VSTs without messing with a wrapper, and CD Architect is a good bonus. :)

dude- thanks for pointing that out:
I've gotten SO used to that now- I FORGOT that it was in version 8 that SONY *did* finally get wise to incorporating compatiblity of vst's VS DX only!!! that was one of the main reasons that I finally bought the upgrade to 8...goes to show how used to a thing you can get...(and that things are STILL slipping my mind  )

The VST implementation is annoying. A REAL pain to scan for new plugins.

Yeah, and you know why I'm using Wavelad more and more these days? Waiting, like, 12 minutes for the plug-in chooser to open, search through that endless list for the plugin you want, double-click plugin, close window, wait 12 minutes for the plugin to load. Repeat any time you want to add plugins. Absurd.

scan IS annoying, but hey- now they can be used in SF...I'm willing to wait a second or two

Well, do you really need to point SF to your main plug-ins folder? VA synths aren't much use in an audio editor ;) I suggest you spend a few minutes sorting through which plugs you are likely to acually use in SF, and copy them to another directory.

I have been using SoundForge since v.5, and currently am using v.8. Problems I have include: Will not open either 64kbps mp3 files or Aiff. Will "save as" both types, and will re-import and play Aiff after "saving as," but not 64kbps mp3. I get a dialogue box stating that these are unsupported formats, contrary to what the SoundForge specs say. Both import into Cubase SX 3.1 and playback with no problem, and SoundForge 6 will open 64kbps mp3 files with no problem. I tried to get some help at the Sony forum, but was repeatedly ignored by to moderators, which in my experience ususlly means it's a bug they don't want to acknowledge. Who knows? Not me, that's for sure! There is also a confirmed bug where by SF 8 will not remember settings for Smart Electronics NyQuist EQ, which is a total bummer for me!

Past that, I have just got to where I dislike and mistrust Sony for several reasons, including lame-ass design problems with my Vaio laptop, the root kit/spyware fiasco and their subsequent mishandling of it, the threats in the forum agreement at the Acid/SF forums (at least they were there when Sony first took over from Sonic Foundry, although they may have been removed since), and the payola scandal (seems Sony wants to sell us all of this software to make pro quality music, but then they keep us from getting airplay....by bribing the stations and DJ's to play their "artists," like Ashley Simpson, Franz Ferdinand and Good Charlotte. Ever wonder how so much shitt gets on the radio?). As far as Sony software and products are concerned, I think I will be moving on. Hope they don't sue me for this.
