what does Energy XT add to my studio?

I use FL as my sole sequencer. But I read so so much praise on Energy XT, that I would like to know what it would add exactly to my studio; what advantages would I get that FL doesn't give me, so that I can complement both...

Of course I've downloaded the demo, but I'd appreciate users' first-hand opinion.

thanks

For me, it's just a different way of thinking. If you're in the mood, you can chain things up in different combinations and it's really easy to switch around the chains to find something new. It gives me a nice, visual flow of the signal, rather than trying to figure out where it's all going.

Having said that, I mainly use the standalone version as a more traditional sequencer and using EnergyXT like that probably won't add a whole lot that you can't already do in FL (although I'm happy to be proven wrong). However, the combination of the standalone, VSTi and VST versions along with the VSTi of FL is hard to pass up :-o

In answer to your question though, if you have the demo of EnergyXT and you've had a serious play around with it (both as plug-ins in FL and as a host for the FL VSTi) and you find that you're still asking the question "what does it add?", you might find that EnergyXT adds nothing at all to your workflow. We all have different needs after all.

thanks for answering. Yes, of course in the end it may be that I don't need it, but I want to know, I want to know.

for instance, i read usually that some of its best features are synth layering and arpeggiator. But I find both features are in FL too. maybe different? those are the things I want to know...
thanks

well one thing i find it useful for
i use orion as my host, dont know about fruity but orion only has two insert fx per channel.

lets say for argument sake i want to load 1 ohmboyz,1 quadfrohmage and yeah thats soundin good but i need endorphin to boost the signal hmmmm...
well load up energyxtfx and then chain all 3 in one insert, or if you fancy add another 10 fx to the chain.

treat all your vsts as one big modular synth :o

and it looks cool too the ladies love a man who uses energyxt :D
:ud:

aha...
FL has got 8 insert effect slots per channel.

XT has practically unlimited ones, and it's very easy to route/crossfeed/feedback (with audio stream VSTs) the signal between them.

Additionally, because it uses MIDI CCs as a frontend for VST parameters you can do all sorts of crazy MIDI manipulation once you've downloaded a few of the plugs people have made for XT. Like having each note change a channel's FX routing or using an envelope follower to fade between 3 different effects depending on amplitude or morphing between presets.

XT has track freeze, which is sometimes the only way I can load up all those synths and effects at once. FL6 seems to be putting a much bigger drain on my cpu, allowing me to use fewer instruments than before.

Post

Track Freeze, eh? mmm...that sounds interesting...
I'll have to try it, I guess. I just don't know where to begin...

how does it perform with hardware synths? say I can control my hardware synth inside Energy xt, can i freeze its sound? does it send sysex messages to the synth?

Post

Never tried it with outboard gear.

Freezing hardware synth? The synth is external so it's impossible unless you just simply record it back inside the computer while playing the midi track.

Well, Orion has that "MultiFX" effect which is basically four effects in one slot. And if you still need more, you can load another MultiFX into that MultiFX.
