Help please!

I intend to connect my digital piano to my pc and record and edit midi samples on the pc. I will only work with midi.

What is the best host for this type of stuff.

I don't need anything extremely complicated, but I would like to be able to easily record and edit midi samples. The host needs to support VST and already have many preset instruments to choose from.

I am thinking about Ableton 5, since it appears to be simple and easy to learn. Also if you suggest something, please tell me if a demo is available.

I have a 2GHz desktop PC with lots of memory, so hardware should not be a problem.

You do mean 'Midi Data' don't you?

Midi samples sounds like your talking about recording the midi instrument as an audio track?

live is not the best program for in depth midi editing IMO, I would suggest Energy XT as being a fine program for editing midi in - it is IMO a bit 'tricky' to get into though ... saying that; once you work it out, you will have much fun with it.

Of couirse Cubase SX/SL have decent Midi facilities as well.

Yes I mean MIDI DATA only. I like to work with data/notes because it gives me more flexibility I think.

How about Podium? It's a great midi host. It doesn't come with any instruments, but there are dozens of excellent free vst's to be found on KVR.

For pure midi sequencing and editing nothing beats Cubase 3 on a Atari

heehee ... this is one of those threads where we all just list our favourite sequencer isnt it ???

... trying to be more balanced ... of the sequencers i own or have tried i wouldnt recommend live (powerful though it is it REALLY isnt built for MIDI recording / editing - it DOES however have some nice built in instruments especially if you pay the extra to enable the operator synth) ... tracktion2 while being easy to use isnt the most powerful MIDI tool around (being built - like live - primarily for audio work) ... energyXT is a VERY capable MIDI recording / routing / editing tool but CURRENTLY has no built-in instruments (except for a pretty powerful sampler) ... fl-studio has a WONDERFUL piano roll for editing MIDI (and a wide selection of built-in instruments) but TBH i never tested recording MIDI into it myself) ...

... dont get too hung-up on the built-in instruments thing though ... as has been said there are SO MANY high quality free VSTi around as to make this a moot point ...

It seems to me that the question was NOT about a sequencer that can host VSTi synths:

If you want to work with hardware that is sequenced through midi, picking up a used Atari with Cubase is not a bad idea and it will be VERY cheap. Any and all PC-based sequencers are miles away from the midi-power that a Atari running something like Cubase3 will give you. I think you might pick up a Atari with a full Cubase3 package for about 100 USD or even less.

I am a Orion user but it is really not the best choice if you want to do life midi-recording instead of pattern programming. This goes for FL as well. At least look for a so called 'linear sequencer' as opposed to a 'pattern-based' one.

seems too me with it's modular design, the arp, the chord and such that eXT would be a very wise choice, and not exspensive

so here are two options I see - either Orion Plat or P5 - of course I agree with you- it'd be much more sensible to buy eXT and then buy with the money you safe a few good instruments (Rhino + eXT = 140€) and download some of the free ones but then he didn't ask for that kind of advice...

project 5 and orion seem to fit the bill here. P5 is handy coz it does have some of the feature set of Live, but has better midi functionality IMO. P5 also includes Dimension, which has some great built in sounds. Orion is a slightly different work flow, but has some very cool internal instruments. If he wants to work with midi and his dig piano, I dont think that FL studio would be the *first* choice for this, tho it would certainly work. The piano roll in fl studio is great, but the midi out is not the most straightforward, and the internal generators lag behind other hosts IMO.

Things like Cubase and Sonar may be a little overkill in this situation.
