Just curious if anyone knows how to Timestretch midi clips in Live 5?
I want to be able to record a 4 bar midi line with my external midi arpegginator then squeeze the part down to 1 bar.
It seems like you should just be able to highlight the midi then use a modifier key to adjust the size on the fly.
Just can't figure it out?
Thanks

Use the buttons ":2" and "*2" in the Notes box of the MIDI editor to halve or double the original tempo of the MIDI clip.
In your case hit the "*2" button twice. Then adjust the loop length.

Thats exactly what I was looking for!
thx
Now to take it a step further -
Can I select just a chunk of midi and adjust the timing of just that selection?
I realize I could just duplicate the clip and adjust the new one then paste what I need into the original but....
..I am a lazy bastard..he he

Yes and no. The buttons to halve or double the original tempo of clips are available for multiple selections, so you can adjust that. But you will have to adjust the loop lenght manually for each clip.borax wrote:Can I select just a chunk of midi and adjust the timing of just that selection?

Double click one of the clips to have the MIDI editor in focus, and then do the multiple selection.

By selecting a "chunk of midi" I ment midi notes that are in the same clip.
So if I recorded an 8 bar midi clip and wanted to time stretch just the midi notes in the second bar of that clip. Could I just select those notes and sqeeze or stretch them?

Drag the clip to the arrange (if you are working in session view),borax wrote:By selecting a "chunk of midi" I ment midi notes that are in the same clip.

select the portion you want to 'stretch' (in the arrange, not in the MIDI editor),
hit command-e (split),
do the adjustmentment of original tempo,
select all parts,
hit command-j (consolidate),
drag it back to the session view.
Sounds more complicated than it is. But it is a few steps indeed, so maybe your way of copying the content to another clip might work better for you.

I see what you mean. It works but its not the most elegant way of doing it.
Actually that method does give you do have access to all of the midi to manipulate, which come in handy.
Thanks
Hopefully Ableton will offer this feature in version 6.
