Host with best Midi learn?

I recently bought Plogue Bidule and it has the best, most intuitive, midi learn feature I've seen implemented in a host. It works just like the midi learn in my G2 editor and the better VSTi's like Reaktor - you just click the learn button, click on the knob or slider you want to control and move the knob or slider on your controller - then turn learn off. You can even assign multiple buttons to one controller. While I realise that many hosts have their own methods of assigning midi controllers I like this intuitive method much better than having to search through a list of cc's etc and I can even use it with plugins that are hard to set up this way - like I can control the sliders on Absynth using a knob on my Phatboy 2. Are there any other hosts that have such simple but powerful control methods?

I've heard about Live being good for midi - so what do you do in Live? (I don't have this - yet)
I forgot Muzys though - its another good one.

That FL method sounds great. Tracktion's isn't perfect. You click an empty "slot" in a list and wiggle a knob. This assigns the controller. Then in a menu, you select a description (not CC#) of the VST parameter to be controlled, or native function.
It's easy... but not QUITE as easy as FL's method sounds. I suppose there are a few good things about it, though. Once I've wiggled my 8 knobs and 8 sliders (PCR-M50 keyboard), I can change what they're assigned to without re-wiggling.

FLS' simplicity is a two-edged sword. Yes, it makes it easy to link a MIDI controller to a VSTI parameter ... but it also means you have to sometimes get contortions ("Midi Out" things) to send a controller directly to a VSTI, and if your VSTI has more than 255 (or is it 512?) parameters you can't always 'reach' all of them.Lunch Money wrote:That FL method sounds great. The plouge way sounds great.
The polac vst loader for buzz is good too. press a learn button on the loader, move GUI then slider, repeat for as many sliders as you need. then turn the button off. All mapped parameters are listed on the parameters' page.
(you then have to map the sliders to midi but buzz isn't based on midi so I can let it go).

What about the "big" hosts - Cubase, Nuendo, Sonar etc? I don't have the first 2 and deleted the last Sonar demo I had ages ago (it sucked for audio) so can't test this.
Is this a new feature in FL Studio 6 or has it always had it? (I can't recall it being that easy last time I tried it but that too was ages ago)

This no longer the case with FL6. All midi CCs are published in the wrapper, you no longer need MIDI OUT for 99% of situations.dougsyo wrote:FLS' simplicity is a two-edged sword. Live's is easy also, just click, move the controller & bob's your uncle.
I would like to be able to assign multiple cc's to one controller though - even if through some kind of midi plug in.

So it sounds like possibly the only need for a MIDI Out now is for multi-timbral synths, I guess ... I've downloaded my FL6 license code but haven't installed FL6 yet.

dont forget though in live you have to switch to 'MIDI controller assignation' mode first ...diverdee wrote:Live's is easy also, just click, move the controller & bob's your uncle.

Nuendo has midi learn button in 'Midi Device Manager'.It's not difficult to configure.aMUSEd wrote:What about the "big" hosts - Cubase, Nuendo, Sonar etc? I don't have the first 2 and deleted the last Sonar demo I had ages ago (it sucked for audio) so can't test this.
Tools are tools, they don't produce anything...
