HI
Juidging from the MEGA questionaire that Cakewalk are sending customers of Project 5 it looks like they may be getting ready to start V3!
I would be pretty keen to see where that might go ... I was very excited by Project 5 V2 initially but after sustained use found that several facets of it really blocked my creative/editing juices from reaching a sublime level of interaction.
FWIW I found the use of auxillary sends a pita, velocity editing (a real biggie with all the midi stuff I do) awkward, the wrapper was not so stable, automation was a bit tedious and the interface was glitchy/slow.
But that was just my experience; perhaps if XT was not available I might have stuck with it.

I guess this is a good month to check my e-mails
I know how you feel with P5 v2
I was initially excited about it too,but in the end found myself just opening Dimension inside the synth host I'm most familiar with.
They seem to be good at creating extra unnecessary steps
I'm not overly optimistic about a change in opinion with V3

I really like P5 version2, it's a very creative environment IMO
The shortfalls it has are (all just my opinion)
* crappy metering - maybe it's time for a real mixer, or at least bigger and meaningful meters
* can't send midi to it's master channel... so you can't control plugins like midi gates on the master
* groove quantize is not real time: i wish it was.
* not enough aux sends
* the audio editing is way too basic... after grooving a clip, sometimes the playback start offset needs to be adjusted so a loop sounds like it's playing back right. They could take a good long look at how Live5 does it, which is well implemented IMO. Or even like Acid
* lack of ability to move and transpose notes in the pattern editor using keyboard
* lack of modular routing

Lack of more than one input at a time stopped me using it much. Its all very well saying it shouldn't need them as its a software studio not a sequencer but the fact is it means you can't use the matrix in a very Live-like fashion without the ability to record audio clips from more than one source.

I returned the survey already. Basically said I wanted more tracks and more routing/handling capabilities for audio clips.
I like it; I rough out a lot of tracks in P5 these days, building up a composition 'live' before dumping it into Sonar for final editing.

An idiot on Set Theory:

Does Sonar import project 5 format or do you just import the wavs and midi?

How about a chopper like ACID PRO?better audio editing.new sampler more drumkits and samples also i would love apaintbrush and eraser also like ACID PRO.make it easier to use one-shots.

Generally, I'll Rewire it into Sonar, bounce down stuff I want to mess with further within Sonar, and freeze everything thats fine 'as is'.aMUSEd wrote:Does Sonar import project 5 format or do you just import the wavs and midi?

Cant you just do that sort of thing by slip-editing a clip?AL GEE wrote:How about a chopper like ACID PRO?
I guess so.better audio editing.
Not fussed about that, Ive already got more than enough plugins which handle samples myself.new sampler
Not important to me at all, TBH.more drumkits and samples

Better still, make it possible to set up 'complex shots', ie chained single shots and loop playbacks... eg play loop 1 five times, loop 2 twice, and single-shot 4 three times after two bars in...make it easier to use one-shots.

I liked Project 5 v2, but I haven't used it since I got a dual-core system since it's basically running at half speed compared to an identical project in Sonar 5. I still use many of the effects and synths, though, and it did really help kick-start my compositions.
I'd also like to see a more serious set of drum samples for Velocity on par with Reason's kits - Dimension and the nice array of effects bring it very close to being a great little studio-in-a-box, but with that paltry selection of drumkits, you pretty much need to immediately add another piece of software (e.g. Battery or Guru) to have a any kind of variety for percussion. Since the idea is to be something of a complete electronic-music-oriented inspiration tool (ala Reason), I'd call that a major shortcoming.
In any case, I'm curious about the direction P5 will go in since Sonar 5 integrated a lot of the things that made it useful to me originally (some of the nice MIDI enhancements, track templates, the convenient "pane" views).

odd, how many of the features that a lot of people have been wanting in P5 next version, have just shown up in the $29 Music Creator package.
