Well, the items in the Options menu as given in Kontakt manual r not the same as what i get.
For example:
1. I don't have "Ask Before Removing Instruments/Zones:" in the software
2. I don't have "Reference Internal Giga or SoundFont Samples (Do Not Write New Samples):". Instead there is an option "Force-load pre-2.0 patches in bulk mode", which is not talked about in the manual.
Reference Internal Giga or SoundFont Samples (Do Not Write New Samples) would hav been good 4 me, coz they take a lotta time 2 load. Why don't i get these options?

ain't nebody gonna help me?

That was removed at the last minute before release because of certain data structure problems. It's a great idea, but one big drawback is that it would force non-DFD loading, which in a way ruins the whole concept. It does "save space" on your hard drive, but given space saving vs. DFD-loading, it's almost certain that people would want to DFD load despite the extra space.

Still, no reason to remove the feature, so perhaps we can get it in in a later version.

To be honest, especially as far as soundfonts are concerned (because most of them are comparatively small): I prefer to load them into RAM entirely, because Kontakt (but that's valid for all samplers) will work way more effciently, especially when you apply pitchbends.
I only load the really large things in DFD mode.
There are 3 kinds of people:
Those who can do maths and those who can't.

That's a good point, thanks.

(Sascha, I'll have a build up shortly that does this, feel free to take a look)

Yeah, and thats why, 4 small SF2 samples, if i had that option and loaded it 2 RAM, it wud save a lotta time, especially when i'm trying out quite a few files 2 see which 1 suits best. But it wud be better still if we didn't hav 2 convert the big files like GIGA and at the same time, had DFD support. Why isn't that possible btw?

Another thing, how does Kontakt handle multiple-bank SP2s? When i import a multiple-ban SF2, it imports samples from all the banks but looks like i get only the first bank 2 play (i've jus started out with Kontakt so maybe i'm wrong). So how am i gonna select the other banks?

Post

There are two methods of Importing; one is to drag from the browser to the work area, the other is to use the Import button on the Browser.

The first method is mainly a temporary method, designed to quickly load things to use temporarily. The samples and instrument go away if you don't save them into Kontakt format.

The second method is designed just for conversions - it doesn't load anything.

The problem with the first method with a Bank-style file like a SoundFont is that what would Kontakt do to prevent all the created instruments that would show up in the work area to not play at the same time?

(The answer is for Kontakt to create a Kontakt Bank, but firstly NI hasn't gotten to that yet, plus there are additional problems since Kontakt Banks only handle 64-128 Instruments and a SF may have more. So there will be always a limit, at least for now.)

So that's why dragging it only gives you #1. Just use the Import button and load the Instruments in afterwards.

Thanx man :-). But the i guess it doesn't import dimensions and other stuff? If thats so, conversion using other utilities wud b better? And why can't Kontakt have DFD with GIGA files?

Post

On the contraire =) - it imports everything possible. I think it's better then anything else, in my biased but hopefully honest opinion.

DFD doesn't work in Kontakt when it's dealing with something "non-standard"; in particular and Sample Start fiddling, or Bi-directional looping. And also when it's accessing sample data in something other then WAVE, AIFF, or .nks files.

Well, if u say so, then its right :D I guess the problems i had read about while importing in the net were in Kontakt 1. btw, how wud u compare Kontakt 2 with HALion 3?

K2 is definitely more powerful programming-wise; with Scripts, modular setup, multiple files, etc. Performance-wise I'm not an expert in, they probably are equivilant.

Beyond that it's the Interface that makes the most different to most people. Personally, I like Kontakt a lot more (though I have my quibbles with it) and I've always disliked HALion's, but from what I know oth get less then perfect marks for their interfaces.

I also get the impression that the top sample libraries are all coming out in Kontakt 2 format (and often are releasing multis that take adavantage of unique scripting and other features in Kontakt 2), with Giga 3 similarly situated, but with Halion lagging behind.

I get the impression that more and more companies don't even offer just sample libs but offer their stuff with a player. So I think if you are not about to create libs yourself you won't need a sampler. It might be different if you would like to do editing. In this case kontakt might be the sampelr of choice since most libs are for kontakt/kompakt/intakt player which all can be edited in kontakt. but be aware that at the moment kontakt player is still based on version 1 .

cheers, akj

Thats a good point, that Kontakt can play the player libraries - makes sense.
