After fiddling about with the free plugins in Tracktion and all the shareware stuff (some of which is quite nice!) I'd really like to invest in some plugins to help me with the basics of tracking. I've enjoyed playing around with Vintage Wamer, but I haven't experienced many other hi end compression / eq plugins. I'm not looking for mastering stuff, just something characterful and flexable enough for use on most any source in my mix. I wish I could try the Golden Audio Channel, but alas, I'm on a mac! UAD1 looks great, but I'm on a laptop. Any recomendations?

Have a look at Wave Arts TrackPlug or Metric Halo's Channel Strip.
Also, have a look at Sonalksis' SV-315 and SV-517 compressor and eq. Separate components rather than a channel strip concept, but they sound great.
For separate components with a more transparent feel, check out Elemental Audio's Eqium, Firium and Neodynium.

the sonalksis stuff looks great, but their site is down right now so I can't try the demo. Do you think their EQ is the most characterful and analog sounding of the bunch? I listen to a lot of 60's 70's soul, psych, r&b, so the "feel" is definitely very important for me. I have demoed some waves stuff in the past, and it seemed a little vanilla to me... useful, but not really getting things together in the way I am looking for (dreaming of!).

Sonalksis sounds really good to me. For other character eqs check HydraTone from TriTone Digital and the URS eqs.
