live sampling options...

Hi all,
I'm looking for some more ideas when it comes to software to use as a live sampler in some electro-acoustic projects I'm currently working on.
LISA :
http://www.steim.org/steim/products.html
appeals to me, except that both laptops I use live are PC's... thats life I guess. So I'm looking for something similar, except for PC...
Ableton live doesn't yet come close for me - especially its lack of audio routing capability. Perhaps if it could run inside another host (like eXT which I use a heap!)
Has anyone run any other sort of sampler inside eXT? (perhaps for the eXT forum...and perhaps I should really try and get my head around the live capabilities of its sampler if there are any....)
Anyhow, let me know any thoughts you have.
Thanks. Kind Regards, Brendan Woithe.

(from their website: "We plan to port it to Windows VST.")
Could you elaborate what audio routing capability you are missing? I'm asking because IMO Live is one of the most flexible hosts when it comes to audio routing....brendanw wrote:Ableton live doesn't yet come close for me - especially its lack of audio routing capability. Hi Brendan,
LISA does look good.
Wish I could try it.
Have you tried
AudioMulch (its live sample loopers, and Metasurface),
Bidule (the audio buffer, spectral freezing and parameter control options),
and LiveSlice (as an effect)?

plasq Musolomo looks interesting indeed...if it does one day get ported to win/VST.
As for Live - I could be wrong about a few of these things, (having last bought version 4, and not really played around with 5) but for a few examples of the things I easily achieve with other (eXT) software...
Live manipulation of an incoming audio signal which changes between dry / wet + different effects / off - depending on what section of a song is being played. These efx often get funnelled to different physical outputs depending on what they are to make life easier for the FOH mixer...delays in chorus's to outputs 3/4, big long reverb in last bar of pre-chorus to 5/6 et. (I use a RME fireface live.)
These fx are automatically changed by the position in a section, & I select sections by midi CC's on a korg microkontrol.
I'd like to also be able to sample this live input for a bar or 4, and play it back with a CC...and mangle it where necessary. <grin>.
make sense? (sometimes hard to explain this stuff...)
I also route the dry mic input to different outputs at different sections of a sequence (I completely arrange songs live - differently everytime a performance takes place...) - so the FOH engineer can treat them in specific ways.
At one point in a song I also use the live input as an input into a vocoder, using my loops (playing back through the eXT sequencer in live mode) as the other signal
fun stuff...
MAybe I'm missing something in live (although i did get very deap into using envelopes on top of samples / loops to help with some of this stuff, but it never seemed to work well with the live audio input....except in "retrospect". (once a section of audio was recorded, it was always fun to drop various automation envelopes on top of the new clips!!!)
To other bits :
I'm currently mucking around with audiomulch - but have not tried its live sample looper - the metasurface is cool (although a little buggy for the things I've put it through) - do you think its worth me spending some more time on it?
And never really got into Bidule...did muck around with it before I went the direction of eXT. (Hoping for some live sampling / audio buffers in XT2.... ... ... ...)
Let me know any other thoughts you guys might have. Cheers, Brendan.

I read your post carefully, and I would say all this is possible in Live.
Basically you would set up as many live input channels as you need for your different effects, set up the channel mute buttons and/or effects ON/OFF to any MIDI controllers you like, set all the channels to record enable, set up MIDI controllers to start (i.e. record) clips, route whatever you need on separate outputs either directly to those outputs or to busses that again go to different outputs. You can also have it the other way round, by setting up channels that grab the signals from any other channels, so you can record those including the effect signal. For sections of your song where you need specific effects you would automate the mute status of the different channels and/or effects ON/OFF. About selecting sections by MIDI controllers, this is something you won't know from Live4, but can do in Live5, since there are very flexible markers/locators that can be assigned to MIDI controllers.
Well, that's it in a nutshell.

will try muck around with it again tonight referring to your post and let you know...I'm not sure I've explained myself too well, but as with most of these things, I've probably overlooked something really simple. B.
new ambient / glitchy tracks and a live sampling quartet recording now over on myspace...

Note that I have edited my post to add something while you replied:
"About selecting sections by MIDI controllers, this is something you won't know from Live4, but can do in Live5, since there are very flexible markers/locators that can be assigned to MIDI controllers."
And another detail as for using clip envelopes "live": You can set up clips with envelopes as you like, but not play them - just have them as templates. Then when you record a loop during your performance, you just drag that loop onto the edit view of a template clip and all the envelope manipulation will be ready to be played with your newly recorded audio.

I wouldn't ditch AudioMulch till you've atleast tried LiveLooper and CanonLooper.
I'm curious about your Metasurface problems.
What were you trying to do with it,
and why or how was it buggy?

While not exactly (or at all) a sampler, Lucifer is an excellent live audio manipulation tool.
Lucifer 2 can record input and load waves and should be released tomorrow.
Several instances of it in eXT have a whole lot of potential for live audio mayhem.

Not sure what you need it to do, but what about Moebius looper with its VST bridge? I've been working with it, trying to get up to speed with it, pretty happy with it.
