mono is good bidule but not poly

i built a synthesizer in bidule, and the synth works well in mono, but when i put the poly adapter and put at least 6 poly the notes sound like static or hiss and the dsp goes way up. do i need more RAM? i have 512mb. could the soundcard be the problem too? i have an e-mu 0404. im using the asio duplex, i tried switching to mme or direct sound but nothing got better. anybody know whats going on?
