UAD-1 Project pack thoughts...

I'm considering buying a UAD-1 and I'm not sure which package I should buy. Novamusik has the Project Pak for $369 or the Ultra Pack for $999. How good are the Project Pak plugs? I don't really need a huge variety of EQs, Limiters, Compressors - just one good model each would suit my needs. Would I find this in the Project Pak or would I just end up wasting my money buying better UAD plugs at full price?

Any thoughts appreciated... Thanks :D

The 1176Se, PultecEQP, and the Realverb are very nice - no doubt - but...I hear some folks say save your money and get at least the Studio Pak plus they also say the guitar plugs are not that impressive.

If you can't spring for the Studio Pak then I believe you can get more by spending $375 on the Waves Native Power Pack - I believe it is a better package (my opinion) - Also, Waves throws in the Doubler, RAxx, and the UR-L for free - 10 or so plugs - good stuff.

Thanks for that reply AVBunyan.

Yes I considered the Studio Pak, but at only $100 less than the Ultra Pak I'd probably go for that instead.

The Waves stuff I'm not so interested in - one of the main reasons I want a UAD-1 is to take the processing load OFF my cpu.

The Project Pak is a great deal, I have it too.
(I added the Plate reverb, it's a must for me)

Bottom line, take a honest look at yourself, if you are the type of guy that "must have it all" and you will probably end up buying the other plugs as well then you should consider the other packs.

Cant beat UAD for compression..I dont think any one makes a better sounding one.

I just quickly wanted to say that if I were you, and could afford it, I would definitely go for the Ultra. You'd be missing out on a LOT of good stuff if you didn't. Dreamverb, the Fairchild, the LA2A, plus the better 1176 makes it well worth it to spend the extra dough. Plus with the Ultra it looks like you would get the Plate and most of the Precision modules, too. :-o

Let me add that I've had these plugins a long time, and I still can't help but smile everytime I use them. They really add a power presence to the sounds you use with them.

PS: I guess I should also say that if you really are just looking to take load off your CPU, the Project PAK would really be a great starting point. The included plugins sound quite good and you'll be able to use a surprising amount of them without affecting your computer's performance. :D

Good Luck!

I understand about the CPU issue - I have a Intel 2.8 processor and usually have less than 8 tracks so it is no issue for me -

I chose Waves because I had small budget and had to get as many different kinds of plugs to compliment the Sonar Sonitus plugs - I am an amatuer hobbyist at best :D

I'd love to have UAD-1's compressors and the Pultec EQ - If the price drops a bit I'd like to have the Project Pak myself - You can't go wrong with it - You get the three essentials - a great compressor, eq and a nice verb - a man can dress up his music real nice with only those 3 if he had to.

Wish you the best - happy mixing :D

Have you considered the FlexiPak? It's the one I'll go for...not only for price - I could afford the Ultra if I really wanted to, but I don't think I'd actually use all of the plugins. With Flexi you get $500 to spend on the plugins on top of the basic ones. Which doesn't necessarily go along way with some of the plugins (I notice the precision multiband is $250) but depending on your needs, it covers many bases. Personally I want the UAD mainly for some decent Eq and for the EMT plate. For only a few dollars extra over the $500 I can get Cambridge and full Pultec, the plate and maybe the LA2A.

If it's mainly dynamics you want, then you could still get a comp, multiband and a limiter for close to the $500.

Personally I think the Ultra is quite a reasonable deal, but you really have to ask yourself what plugins you're going to actually use. Initially I drooled over many of them...but I don't use choruses that often, I use vocals even more rarely so the DimensionD is redundant, 1 character Eq and one precision Eq is plenty enough for me, some of the compressors/levellers aren't really that useable for every type of channel or group precisely because of their particular character, so I figure my lust was just that...gear lust. The multiband was the only fly in the ointment for me...that one is one I think I would use alot, and when the price of individual plugins creeps up to $250, then maybe the everything-in-one-hit deal becomes more attractive.

I'd say, really sit down and list which plugins you'd really use regularly before deciding - and be brutal and pare away the ones that would just end up being plugin candy.

I vote for Flexipack + 1176 + LA2A.

The '76 and '2A are the best and most indispensible plugs imho, and the 1176SE is *not* in the same league as the full 1176. If you don't get those two, you're missing out on the core value of the UAD1.

(Unless of course you're not that bothered about compression, then just pick the ones you want). So I'd definitely say go flexi if you can't budget for the studio/ultra...

Actually, neither the Dimension D nor the Multiband are included in the Ultra Pak.

The FlexiPak is a cool idea, but just looking at the store that $500 would disappear fast - virtually everything sells for $150+.

Can't agure the point - my point was if one could only have "one" pack given the budget then I felt the Waves native would cover more basics and give more plugs for more situations.
