Hi

I haven't used any of these but:

- are they usable at all (except for maybe quick commercial work)?

as I see it you get (usually) one drum loop, one bass loop, some synth or guitar lines or chords and that's it. usually no chord progressions or whatever...

In my case, I could use the drumloops as I'm really shit at programming, but only one loop per style/song is well...nothing.

thoughts?

As much as I want to hate on loops it's kind of hard to. For hip hop music without jacking parts off records they are the next closest thing. The main problem with loops is people don't see the full spectrum of what can be done with them. Often when I sample off a record I hit the whole song pretty hard, but never once use a full phrase from the song. Often times just use a single note. Loops are no different, except they are 100% legal to use. There's quite a few different ways to use a loop...the key range isn't going to be like a synth which in the right case will promote creativity by having such a limitiation, and in others will close the mind seeing only one way. Just some thoughts.

There's really way too many contruction kit based sample cds out there. It's quite frustrating. I have a hard time understanding what sort of pros constantly get their main hooks from them. Maybe their biggest market is hobbyists using Garageband, I don't know but I wish all the CDs just focussed on drums and FX most of all

I think the main idea behind construction kit is to have the basis of a song & sample it the same way you would sample a record, except that you have all the elements already seperated, which is better. Plus the audio quality if often better than vynils.
