Hi and welcome. Here's what I'd try:
1) Google for free sound effects files -- "ocean liner" wav would be a good search phrase.
2) Try playing a very deep bass note using a "Calliope" soundfont or patch.
Reverb will probably help, especially the latter.

There is a ARPPE2600VA download. In the zip there is a patch called "Big ship". Its meant to do the sound of a ship horn. Its big.

Duncan, you're absolutely right about that site ! Wow, but first I'm going to buy some more ram and an external HD (grumble : "Those damn good tips to wonderful sample 'n loop sites...").

There are tons of different types of Boat Horn - the most common is the hand held gas types you often see at football games - only used to indicate direction to other vessels in restricted waters - plus in FOG coz without radar there is very little chance of seeing the vessel (particularly fog at night - that's just horrid)
I would get a gas type and pitch it if you want bigger.
Another type of nautical sound is a Bell - often heard from navigation markers along side inner shipping channels - they just ring with the passing waves, they also send out RF too for cross bearings.
