They sound identical to me.
The one difference (beside the location) is that the one in the rack is stereo and you can pan (and volume) each voice separately.
It's a gimmick FX, I don't think I will ever use it.
If I want harmony I can just play it or even record each part separately for a much better result.
Might come handy for someone playing on stage.

As far as I can tell you can not get rid of them while tracking live.
