It's annoying how they spell everything with K's.

Congrats on your rig. Let us know how it pans out. Why Komplete Care? Is that insurance or something?

Komplete Care is how they tricked me into paying for free updates before the even come out. Just kidding, I get major upgrades Free for a year or so. I bet EW chimes in soon and sets the record straight.

So, what exactly is Kore? I read the product description and was left with a few questions...

Is it a sequencer? Or, what exactly does it do? Does it have any competition right now?

Easiest thing to compare it to is Reason's Combinator on steroids with an external hardware controller/audio interface and a metapatch browser thrown in for good measure..

You can set keyspans for synths/sendFX, have midi file players for each instrument, extensive midi filtering, use it in standalone or load as a VSTi/Audio unit/whatever else..

It's a vastly dynamic tool that's gonna impress alot of people.

As Don said, it's kind of like Reason's Combinator- I think it more resembles Chainer myself. However, unlike Chainer, you can stack multiple instaces of a plugin on the same MIDI channel.
Unlike any other host that I'm aware of, you can route the same controller to multiple destinations in the plugin- for example, in one instance of say Reaktor you can control pulse width of one oscillator, detune of another and filter cutoff from the same controller. Add to that multiple pages for the same instrument that you can step through via the controller and the advantages become even greater.

Another cool feature- say you're using Logic and you want to use Mac VSTs in it but don't want to spring for Angus' wrapper. Kore comes to the rescue- load the VSTs into Kore and load that into Logic as an AU- no wrapper needed. Or, load AUs like MX4 into the Mac version of Cubase. Same goes for PT users- you can load VSTs into PT without a wrapper using the RTAS version. The reverse isn't true though- Digidesign's licensing practices doesn't make it easy or affordable to do the reverse. And, it still won't you use host-specific plugins outside their host- no ES1 in Cubase, for example.

Now, when you remember you can load any third party VST into this and assign controllers to it and categorize its patches for use in your database, life becomes even more interesting.

It's not for everybody- for some, it'll be overkill. If you're a Komplete owner, it's definitely worth it. If you play live or if you're like me and do most of your recording as live as possible, it's a no brainer

It's even got me working up a live show for the first time in ten years or so

I have to admit that I haven't fully grasped what Kore is about. But isn't it pretty similar to eXT except that it's more straightforward, easy to use and has an included hardware controller?

I mean one can do arpeggiators, midi-players, midi -> vst automation, layered instruments and so on in any way you like in eXT. And it also runs as a standalone and as a plugin. Or am I missing something?

It does have some things that eXT doesnt, like the meta-data on NI presets, and the controller integration is actually pretty sweet as far as the patch browsing goes. Also the high resolution knobs would be nice to have, I've been using a bcr2000 and while I love the quantity, the 7 bit resolution just doesn't cut it for a lot of applications.

energyXT has been doing this for a long time now, I think as long as it has been around... definitely for the last year or two that I've been using it.

Actually you can do this in Bidule too.
