Smooth jazz & muted guitar sounds?

Sampler and Sampling discussion (techniques, tips and tricks, etc.)

In the absence of a live guitarist, I'm looking for high-quality jazz guitar and muted electric guitar sounds. If you listen to any smooth jazz station you'll hear very similar guitar tones from song to song. In particular, I like Paul Hardcastle's work, if any of you are familiar with him. Currently, I do have Sonic Reality's guitar capsules, and they have some very nice patches, but if I'm trying to actually fake a real guitar I probably need something with more round robin samples and velocity layering.

Thanks in advance!

Edit: Here's a quick demo with the type of tone I'm after.

Hi Zircon,

Perhaps you should be looking towards Prominy's LPC products.

Listen to this:

Yeah, that's somewhat similar to what I'm looking for but it has too harsh of an edge - the tone I'm looking for is even "rounder" if you know what I mean. Also I think the LPC library is primarily oriented towards rock sounds so I don't think I could justify spending $300-$400 on a library that I'd only be using a fraction of. However thank you for the suggestion.

Hi again, Zircon,

Before you dismiss LPC, there are probably a couple things to consider:

1.) the LPC demos are just demos - not really phrases from a phrase library. I think the ability to make the guitar sound convincing in a particular genre is mostly dependent on the skill of the user.

2.) The prominy people typically get their "tone" (in their demos) by following their 'clean' guitar samples (post sampler) with an amp simulater (a la GuitarRig or POD XT). I think you could hone in whatever tone you want from the Amp model

That said, if price constraints and 'wishing to get your exact tone already pre-canned in a sample library' are your buying parameters - this is probably not the best way to go.

Regards,
Kevin L.

PS. You could also look at the Guitar Libs from BelaD media - But I think they are typically more Rock oriented.

Hey, I'm certainly not knocking LPC. It's a great product and, along with Lyrical Distortion (which I own), really show how far sampling has come. I'm also someone who usually spends a lot of time tweaking sounds.. in fact i probably spend about 90% of my time on that aspect of a song and then 10% on the notes themselves! So trust me when I say that I'm not one to just use presets and not try to design anything for myself.

However, I'm a keyboardist. I don't know much of anything about guitar amps/cabs, pedals etc - it's simply not my realm. I'd like a guitar patch that I can just sit down and play without having to worry about those aspects of guitar sound that I know nothing about. I've played a variety of high end keyboards from companies like Roland and Yamaha and there are some GREAT jazz/muted guitars on those units, so I know my expectations aren't unrealistic - I'm just looking for that same sort of sound and functionality in software form.

Hey zircon, I have exactly the same desire. I am setting up a new system so haven't had a chance to get everything together, but am keen to try out Revitar 2 demo with some clean presets, as discussed in another thread (though that was about heavy guitar so no point directing you there)...anynone who wants to comment on Revitar's clean capabilities would be eagerly attended.

Oh, and don't forget: "smooth jazz sucks". They said so in another thread.

Dimension Pro has a jazz guitar that sounds pretty good (at least in the mp3 at the Cakewalk site).

Here you go:

I think the song is called Elevator Music. All the Dimension sounds from P5 are included with Dimension Pro, if I remember correctly.

I've had my eye on it for a while. (Lately I keep telling myself that I need to keep my spending under control. Hee.) There's also a Dimension Pro page with samples of individual patches:

The going price is $249, but B&H Photo and Video will discount it further with their "email me a better price" feature.

Hi Zircon, have you thought about getting someone from the forum to play for you and toss them a few bucks(i'm sure some would just do it for fun too)? It could be a much better result than any sample library. I use guitar samples sparingly in my work but as a guitarist i'll never be convinced of any sample library capturing those nuances.

Oh and i'd do it for you for free but my electric guitar is not in my possession right now. Sorry
