The most efficient way to adjust an EQ plug-in?

HI

Just a passing thought really; but when I see eq plug-ins that still attempt to recreate a hardware look with knobs or sliders I can't help but feel they have somehow missed the point?

Surely the only way to quickly modify an eq setting is where you 'grab' an EQ point and move it around with the mouse to the desired frequency and add or subtract level by moving the plot above the 0db line.

Being able to open or close the eq bandwidth by using the scroll wheel is the other method of making this procedure VERY quick; so why do people still design eq's with 3 knobs that will take 3x (at least)the time to make the same adjustments.

I just couldn't use an EQ like that anymore, it is just far too slow, surely these are the type of refinements that make using a virtual workspace transparent?

that's one of the things I really like about posifhopit - once you're used to working that way anything else just seems so slow & cumbersome.

my preferred way of working is nyquist EQ and posihfopit. They both seem really intuitive with the gain vs. Q vs. frequency adjustments. All done elegantly with the mouse.

Although I wish nyquist had automatic gain compensation with the bands, right now it's a bit counter intuitive. To me at least, and definitely when compared to posihfopit.

Actually, it's really, really tough to beat good old, butt ugly sliders...fast, clean, space conscious, functional.

But nobody wanted to hear that, right? :hihi:

This was one of the reasons I chose to buy the Gliss EQ from voxengo over the kjaerhus GEQ.
Very happy with Gliss but could have been very happy with the GEQ aswell if it had direct screen adjustment.

Voxformer ! Q adjustment with the mousewheel, like in scope.
Perfect, every developer should copy this.

No one loves intuitive working more than me.

But take al ook at GEQ from Kjaerhus

To find a sweet spot, or a cut point, it's very easy to poke up one of the gains and then - with eyes shut ears only - sweep the frequency til it sounds right.

I find I can't do this so well with a drag and drop eq, as I need to keep my eyes open, which is a distraction for the ears.

Does this make sense?

you can do the same with posi - shift+left mouse to poke up the gain & then ctrl & left mouse to sweep the frequencies (the shift/ctrl lock the movement to vertical/horizontal axes) & then use the mouse wheel to adjust Q.

The above is similar for Gliss aswell except with Ctrl and Alt.

Interesting way of working, may give it a try :)
