While others will no doubt disagree, I believe that generally you get what you pay for. That doesn't mean that the most expensive host will be the best for what you want, but generally as you pay more you get more.

The low level hosts include FL, XT, Orion etc

Mid range is Acid6 (very good imho & quite 'minimal'), Live

High range is SX3, Sonar (can't go wrong with either imho)

Then you're looking at Nuendo and Protools.

There's dozens more hosts of course (just look at the host links).

With most of these hosts you can keep things reasonably simple but just not bothering to learn or use many of there functions. Or you may want to go for a very simple host and then team it with another app for detailed single audio file work like SoundForge...

if money is no object- i say tracktion2 + ext + Adobe Audition

and then buy a bunch of great plugins (ozone, etc)

Disagree indeed!

I would use FL Studio if it were twice the price that it is, and I would certainly never call it "Low Level". I wouldnt ever call XT low level either.

It does everything the poster asked for, but from using it as an example he's probably unhappy with it for some reason.

If money isn't an issue, buy one of everything.

There isn't a host out there that a talented person couldn't use to make good music.

best is the one you know the most.

The following statement is true.
The previous statement is false.

Cubase SX, Nuendo, Sonar, Pro Tools, Live, Logic, Samplitude, & Digital Performer will all do what you're asking for. Acid & Project 5 will not, AFAIK, & I think most people would agree that Samplitude is not so good for editing midi (I can't comment on FL Studio or XT since I don't know much about them). IMO, Cubase SX does what you're asking for better than those others.

FL Studio, Orion, Sonar, Tracktion. Depends on your style of working, do you prefer linear (Sonar, Tracktion) or pattern-based (FL Studio, Orion)? Do you like doing all sorts of weird MIDI stuff (FL Studio, Sonar) or is simple MIDI editing sufficient (Orion, Tracktion)?
