question about volume

When I use ManyTone with Cubase, I notice the volume setting "normal" seems to be a little low. But if I put it on "high", and I need a loud bass sound at some point, then I get a clipping signal on the mixer. What's the normal way to deal with this? Does it mean my other instruments are too loud? When it clips - I don't notice any distortion in the sounds - so does it matter?

Hi Joel

One of the reason for the different volume settings in the ManyStation GUI config box is that different hosts sometimes have different Default volume / Output settings on load up. So not knowing what hosts our buyer is going to use the product with... by putting the switch in our config it allows you to adjust a bit this setting.

Of course naturally some sounds are louder and carry Lower frequencies etc. that can cause a clip if your channel volume on your Cubase or other mixer is too high. If this happens yes i would say you need to turn down your track that is Clipping and then match your other tracks to it. Or ... As Frequencies sometimes can make the track clip a bit but the volume does not seem loud, then for this ...just put a compressor/limiter across those Clipping tracks which will allow you to Boost the volume with no clips. Also an EQ can help define the frequencies wanted better, and lower the Peaking/Bad ones.

If you use both, for what you describe, i would probably put the EQ first then the compressor after it most of the time. This so the EQ does not raise the peaks you just compressed if you have the compressor first. Note though ... This is not a hard rule, it's just one usable method of taming what you describe. Don't be afraid to experiment. Maybe the Eq after comp will sound better on some sounds or give a better result.

I think what you describe is just a typical issue that arises alot in a Mixing environment. The above is how it is best addressed.
