What is this effect (invert wave)?

what effect is this when you take an audio signal and invert the waveform every x ms? Is that ring modulation? What is ring modulation? What does this effect I am speaking of sound like and where can I find it? I really need to learn programming I think, because I always have these questions.

Oh so ring modulation is just amplitude modulation (usually with a sine wave)? What Am I talking about then? I think what Im imagining is completely different.

don't know what might do that sort of effect...hmmm....if ya had an lfo to mod the "x ms" that might be very interesting....then again, it might sound like pants!...I dunnofunkadil wrote:what effect is this when you take an audio signal and invert the waveform every x ms? I was just thinking this originally because I have a track that is completely flat on one side and wavy on the other (distortion) so I thought about inverting it every once in a while. As an effect it could be crazy on just about anything I could think of.
EDIT: Im thinking if i ever get into plugin developement Ill make something like bifilter and just make a whole bunch of experimental effects to choose from with 2 or 3 knobs. This being one of them.

I swear there's a plug that does this. I dont remember what it's called. All I remember is that it has a black and white interface.

The track you're talking about...
it sounds to me that it is M/S and not L/R,
where M = L + R and S = L - R,
that could be why one chanel sounds 'flat' and the other is distorted.
Try a M/S utility and see if it can fix your problem.

a ring modulation with a very low sine (or better, square) would do the effect you're talking about

looks like Dozius found our winner

be careful!
Especially if it's 3:30am and you're supposed to be asleep already.
otherwise- dfx polarizer is not unlike a bit crusher...
nice effect: using nicfit's CCmod to send LFO to the "leap" parameter

while testing this out, I find it important to note that you MAY want to turn your volume down if you DO decide to hit the "implode" parameter. I think I just lost some hearing and I nearly soiled me britchesPolarizer takes every nth sample and polarizes it. The number of samples skipped and the strength of the polarization are adjustable. You can also implode your sound.

As already suggested, ring modulation with a square wave will do this.funkadil wrote:what effect is this when you take an audio signal and invert the waveform every x ms?
If instead of "every x ms" you flip the phase "every cycle" (on the upward zero-crossing) you get an octave divider. This ony works (cleanly) for monophonic sounds. My "Flip Speed" plugin (part of the Psycho Toolkit bundle) does exactly this (among other things...)

Anytime clone ensemble is mentioned that deserves a bump.
I used to use dfx polarizer waaaay too much because I was so intrigued
by what it did.
