What would you buy first?

I am FINALLY gearing up to start making some decent purchases in the effect arena. I have been very patient about learning about VST and how they function over the last 1 1/2 years. Now I'm looking into getting some primo stuff. I maintain a hoarde of freeware plugins, but there are some (major) gaps I feel I would like to fill with commercial plugins...
I am going to be spending up to $400 shortly. My option is to either get:
1 GREAT reverb + 1 or more other plugins (from roughly $100 left over),
or,
1 GREAT compressor + X# of other plugins of choice (from roughly $150-250+ left over)
I would REALLY like the reverb, but if I get the compressor I am guaranteed Inspector XL metering plugins from Elemental Audio and more, and I kind of want those too.
But disregarding my other incentives, what would your choice be?
CHEERS!!!!

If I ever feel the need to buy an effect it will probaby be some distortion unit or some harmonic exciter. Or both.

Which reverb and compressor are you looking at buying?
I use SIR for my reverb and don't think I'd want any other ... Want a different sounding reverb... get a different impulse...
I'd personally spend it on a compressor if I had some money to burn...
But depends on what you are currently using and what you are thinking of purchasing...

Because you use FL, if I were to choose between the two, I would purchase a reverb as the FL compressors are all great. Though I like the reverb options, I'm not as crazy about 'em.
(That said, Camelphat is pretty nice.)

Reverbs are most important to me.I think they bring more to my mixes then anything.

True.
I only use it for mixing.
If I really need a reverb whilst tracking (which is rarely) I'll just chuck Kjaerhus Classic Reverb in and then replace it with SIR at the mixing stage.
Bujt yeah if you want to use it for live work then SIR is not really an option

There are good comps for free, and great ones are cheap, so I chose reverb as it is the only investment on your list.

Dont' forget about Ambience! Free and not to be dismissed. I voted compressor, just because it's such a crucial foundation of mixing, and if I was getting Inspector XL too, then...

$400 will get you MasterComp and Lexicon 42 from PSP Audioware, two excellent plugins. I've got PSP42 installed on my Receptor and I use it a lot. It's an excellent reverb. I cannot say anything about MasterComp though.

I would say take the 400 bux, buy the ARTS ACOUSTIC REVERB vst and then buy the Sonalksis compressor (not the multiband one, the other one) and/or Voxengo's Marquie compressor, for a quality all purpose solution.

Peace
