ST2 does NOT search for new presets at startup. Still, it takes more than 30 seconds to load it. Why?

More information is needed than that, mate. Like your host, system spec et.c.

And are you sure preset scanning is off. On my system, with 20Gb of ST data (rather than the 6Gb shipped with ST2) it took 25-30 seconds to open with preset scanning on. With scanning off it took less than five seconds. (checked after a full reboot so there was nothing cached in system memory). Thats an AMD X2 3800+, with 2Gb of RAM and the sounds on a SATA drive, for comparison.

Meanhwile, try a defrag of the drive your ST data is on.

Also, make sure your running ST 2.1, not 2. 2.1 has a much faster load time.

Yep we don't even know if he's running VST, AU, DirectX or RTAS versions of this.

sorry guys, finally got some time to finish this...
ST VST-version 2.1.1
Pentium Mobile 2 GHz
1 Gb ram
No need to defrag the harddrive at this moment according to disc-manager.
Appr 20 Gb of ST-data

I got it where it doesn't search for new sounds and it still takes a good amount of time to load for me too.

I have the same problem. It takes about 20-30 seconds to start ST2.1 when the "relist on start" is off. Lot longer if it's enabled. (I have ~26Gb of sounds)

What does it load when it start when the relist is set to off? (there's a lot of disk i/o at startup) It only takes this long the first time, so not a big deal for me, but still it's a little strange. I havent experinced the same problem with SS2 & Philharmonik.

I've got a P4 3.0Ghz northwood, 2Gb RAM, 3 Seagate 149Gb S-ATA disks. Also tried to put the instrument folder on a different drive, but it's the same result.

I've posted about this before as well and have never gotten a satisfying answer as to why this happens. I loaded the entire Sonik Synth 2 library into ST 2.1.1 and it was extremely slow in loading. When I took out the SS2 library (and kept the ST2.1 original sounds) it works like a charm--so I kept the sounds separate. 10 Gig seems to be the threshold.

I just wish SS2 would update to the ST2.1 engine so that SS2 would load just as fast.

Im have the SS2 libraries as well, and dont see this slowdown.

Well, sometime in the next couple of months I'm going to update my rig with a newer, faster PC. I'll be trying this all over again to see what works and what doesn't. Maybe the answer is in there somewhere...

Cheers

Even if it doesn't completely rescan your ST2 Instruments folder, it still has to load the instrument database (so it can list the instruments). If you've thousands of sounds (and 26 gigs IS a lot of sound!), then I can imagine this taking a while. My ST2 takes a little while to start up (especially when loading a project with a few hundred megs of samples!), but fortunately it only does this when loading for the first time. Afterwards, working with it is quick as ever.
