is it possible to link each instrument to a certaion key on my keyboard, so I could press c to play the kick drum, c# to play the hihat, e to play the snare and so forth?

I'd love to bust out some drums using my midi keys.

If you have drum wav files, it's possible to use fruity sampler and layers to do it.

It may be less hassle in the long run to use:
(1) a soundfont with GM (or other drum mapping) and a soundfont player.

(2) a drum-player like DR-005 (still free I believe) or DK+ where you can load your wav files and build a kit, or use one of the bundled kits.

It's probably to your advantage to use a standard mapping like GM or IMAP if you're building your own set.

The fruity FPC does this for you. It's the one that looks like a controler with pads.
Just open up the pianoroll and switch it to the mode where you can see the names of the key you're playing. you'll notice that some names like have been replaced by the name of the drumsample which is linked to it.

A tip I got from Looptalk..
Friends of mine wanted to jam together using 1 instance of fruity, one on a midi drumkit, the other on keys.. Since FLS stupidly routes midi to only the currently selected Generator (if it's a native FLS Gen, such as FPC) the solution is this:

Run FLS as a VSTi - each Gen channel then responds to a single midi channel, regardless of which is selected. Ie, the first channel responds to Midi Chan 1, and so-on.

Savihost is a good, lightweight way to do this, but any host will do.
