I really love iZotope Trash, and was wondering if anyone can recommend anthing out there that has similar flexibility? I especially love the digital distortions, and have an increasing interest in waveshaper distortions... Any recommendations?

There is nothing else like it. Trash is not just a distortion unit. It is a multidimensional sonic mangler with delay, highly flexible lfos, amp/cab modeling and microphone emulation. This plugin is highly underrated IMO.

Ditto -- Trash is one of my go-to FX, and would have to be pried from my cold, dead hands...
In the meantime, though, give Darkware's Battery Acid or Dual Trashers a whirl for that nasty waveshape-y distortion:

CamelPhat3 is good but too heavy handed IMO. Trash is much more capable in making subtle manipulations. Maybe i's my inability to program CP3 but Trash is more transparent to my tiny brain.

I find it much easier to get more "musical" results from CamelPhat3 than Trash. But when I'm looking for a particular gritty sound or nuance, I always head for Trash...

I haven't found anything inCamelPhat3 that works for me. It's too harsh. Trash is more versatile I find.

i agree that trash is pretty unique in what it does all in one box but i guess to emulate it you would need a chain of the following ...
1 - compressor
2 - multimode filter / EQ
3 - versatile distortion 1
4 - versatile distortion 2
5 - multimode filter / EQ
6 - amp simulator
7 - delay
... so i guess what we COULD do is suggest free / cheap / expensive options for each of those stages and see what we come up with ??? maybe even a few sound tests and examples ???

I can't believe I've never heard of this guy before - I'm glad there's a 3 day weekend coming up, because most of these look phenomenal... Also, that Lucifer plugin listed in this topic also really caught my eye. Thanks for all the input, this might be just what the doctor ordered!
I guess my next question would be, who's making the good software vocoders these days? I know Orange used to be the big name, but that's one effect I strayed from that I think I'd like to get back into...

Good man! Well done. Btw the way do you have CamelPhat3? if you do could you perhaps provide some clues how to use it. All I get is banging loud distortion about as subtle as a thermonuclear device.pHz wrote:i did !!!

On this ShapeShifter URL you gave me, I see the matrix is based on some in/out manipulation that you can draw - how exactly does waveshaping work? It's relatively new to me, and I feel a long way off from understanding how a plugin like that can create a guitar sound like NIN's Broken...

Here, an all-free alternative. Just rack these up in energyXT (free to use, but you can't load saved projects without registering), connect an envelope comp to Bifilter's cutoff parameter to supplement an LFO, and Bob's your uncle.pHz wrote:1 - compressor

1 - buzzroom GranComp3 (multiband compressor)
2 - Tone2 Bifilter
3 - Smartelectronix Cyanide2 (waveshaper with pre/post filters)
4 - Noizware Tridirt (tri-band distortion)
5 - pohsifohpit (multiband parametric EQ. Use the Screamer mode for a little extra colour)
6 - Voxengo Boogex
7 - Kjaerhus Classic delay (I've never liked the delay in Trash, but the Kjaerhus delay has a similar tape-like dirty delay, and neither interpolate delay time). Throw in any old bitcrusher (like tBt's SampleReducer, which gives 7 modes for some added character)

It's a per-wavecycle gain response curve, so what goes in is forced to the volume curve of the waveshaper. Pull a point up on the curve, the volume will get pulled up at that point in one wavecycle of the incoming signal, push a point down, you squash the wavecycle.caustic386 wrote:how exactly does waveshaping work?
Distortion in this case means making extra harmonics in a signal louder. Think the difference between a sine wave and a square wave: a sine wave has no extra harmonics (all smooth curves), a square wave has lots (all flat corners). So waveshaping is like forcing a sinewave to become more like a square wave, in a wobbly sort of way.
