Hi
There seems to few threads about them at the moment, so I'm wondering are they being used for anything other than the rhythmic cutting you hear in a million and one trance pads?
Garry.

i use them on all sorts of things.... very rarely on a pad.
a pattern gate can work wonders on really nasty distorted bitcrushed drums. it preseves the nasty hit without leaving the heavy tail.
i use them a lot on distorted anything really. one of my favourites at the moment is distorted rhodes piano, through a gate, through a delay.
a pattern gate can also be really uselful when used subtly to tighten up timing on stuff.
gated white noise makes an excelent basis for a crunchy rhythm.

Who built the Eiffel Tower?
Chartres Cathedral is in what French town?
The Art Intitute of Chicago is in what American city?
Yeah, I know I'm a smart-ass.

I use gates (plus arpeggiators and the likes) to add a rhythm quality to otherwise less rhythmical material (pads, sustained guitars, whatever). Most often I only use them as some sort of modulation though.
There are 3 kinds of people:
Those who can do maths and those who can't.

And the best ones can be triggered by MINI note rather than relying on simple patterns. As an example, Z3ta+ uses a gate that triggers on and off by a MIDI note. This allows you to lock in on the feel of a song rather than being stuck with dead on timing.
All I need to be happy is one more VSTi.

I've heard two nice uses of pattern gates recently on voice recently:
1) on Kool Keith/Dr. Octagon's voice on the new Peeping Tom album (when he says "gota get away" in the intro
2) Nevermore's Enemies of Reality when he's singing in a giant binaural choir of his own voices "There is no stronger drug than reality" in the song Seed Awakening.
Also check out the new version of Affected ME Vst that was posted here yesterday - I'm already in love with it's modulated comb filter and ringmod gates.

You can use a sequenced gate like a complex tremolo effect. So run Cramps-style rockabilly guitar through it and it'll just give you a more exotic pattern than a standard tremolo on/off thing.
I use sequenced gates often in place of MIDI events. So I'll set up an ungated sound (a sound that has no beginning and end, only middle) and I'll use a sequenced gate plugin to build a sequence. Part of the reason I do it is that I'm just used to it, it's much like working with modular synthesizers. It effectively turns patching a synthesizer into a compositional process, which is a fairly common approach among modular users. The other reason is that you can get surprising results when your sound sources aren't designed to be perfectly in sync with the mechanisms that shape them.
I suppose like the trance guys (of which I am not one), the main use is for adding any kind of punctuated rhythm to any sustained sound, or creating a competing rhythm to any existing rhythm (try it on voice or drum, and then offset the rhythm to chop heads and tails unexpectedly).

That reminds me of a clip from classic 80's UK TV quiz show, "3-2-1" where two couples had to identify the composer of a piece of classical music they were being played. One of the couples buzzed in: "Erm, ooo, ahh, it's, ermm, I can't remember, but it's the same bloke that wrote Handel's Water Music - sorry, I can't remember". The host passed it over to the second couple whose response was: "No idea. Was it Mozart?"emdot_ambient wrote:What do people use Trance Gate for?
