OK I figured out why I was liking the RVox demo more. I was testing both out with just a vocal line by itself at full volume. The RVox was able to make the vocals louder and did not clip. However Voxformer demo did not sound as good because I was also trying to make it sound louder and I got discouraged because the "clipper" indicator on Voxformer started turning red.

OK my revalation, the point of a compressor is not to make an instrument louder by itself. The instrument will apparently be part of a mix so the compressor is there to tame the dynamics and help it set well in a "mix" not by itself. Demoing Cruncessor as well helped me figure it out. So now I know don't try to get things so that they sound good by themselves but in a mix.

Good call dude.

Compressors programatically turn the loud stuff down, thats all they do.

By turning the loud stuff down, you reduce the dynamic range.

If you then use the gain to add more volume, then you've reduced the dynamic range but turned the whole signal up, hence you get the same effect *as if* the compressor just turned the quiet stuff up, but left the peaks alone.
