I am looking for a program (free vst) that will be able to generate a sequence from a single note, me defining the key chord.
Maybe this is a step sequencer, I tried unsuccessfuly StepChild. I can't get it working.
This is to be used with synth in synth pop songs à la St Etienne.
Any suggestions ?
How do you proceed to create such sequences ?
Thanks !

I had a try few months ago with both breathcube and fortune's but what I need is much more simpler.
It's like: you type in the chord (say Am) and it produce an arpeggiated style random pattern of notes that belongs to the scale, you giving the tempo, feeding with midi notes the synth of your choice.
I'll give another try to breathcube by the weekend.
I saw some plugins of your own (Arp4 midi, Talent, Diner)
that match the criterias, which one you recommend ?

you should try energyXT, tho it's not free but very cheap, and does what you want and much much much more ;-)

That's something I want to do for long time, but each time I give it a try I'm confused with the GUI. Do you know a step by step tutorial for sequencer "newbie" like me ? Out of Tracktion I hate tryning new DAWs as I have to spend more time sttings the things up than playing music... ok, everyone has to.
But I agree with you on the fact that I must persevere in the energyXT way, it certainly worth the effort !

there are some tutorials online,

here are some flash-tuts:

here a manual:

here a link to general information and tuts and guides:

everything else you should find/ ask in the eXT forum here at KVR.

I hope you find your way to eXT ;-)

i don't think any of them produce notes from a user-definable set :p tbh i don't have a clue about most of them because i've never used a midi-vst compatible host.. i made the plugs for other people because i could, and they didn't exist.. so i honestly don't remember much about them :)

...except for 'talent,' because it's a bit more complex.

in talent you select from predefined scales.. then you can limit the range of output notes which might give you more control towards a 'chord-like' definition of output..

it would then randomly produce notes in that range with a few tricks like the 'step up/step down' stuff.

it's possible the arp4midi or someone else's arp has a 'random' output where you can hold down the specific notes you want... :p :)
