But is this worth bypassing Sonar, Project5, or even Live?
How's the audio recording?
EDIT: BTW, I'll still use FL Studio for all midi recording/programming. The piano roll is still the best.

They've listened, and solved most people's gripes. If you qualify for an upgrade path, it's a good deal.
It could be better, but I think they've pulled it together at last. I personally prefer it to FL, although I actually use both.
Try the demo; it's a pretty generous arrangement. You'll see that you can do WAVs, audio and MIDI quite easily, in conjunction.
I wish the damned thing loaded more quickly, but that's a personal quirk. Maybe I have too many VSTs, or something.

Acid Music Studio is a lot cheaper and has most of the needed features.
Make sure to have a look to both of them.

I'm completley happy with Acid, and it is certainly better than Live. But then i only use it for timestreching loops and i don't use it for midi. I rewire Acid to Cubase.
I love the explorer for searching loops and audition them in real tempo.
Ableton can do too, but i have glitches when cutting and redrawing. With Acid i don't have that.

The only thing missing for me in Acid Home Studio is multitracking (which Acid Pro has).

One thing I was wondering about- it doesn't look like they've added a VSTi Freeze function yet. Is it possible to bounce the output of a VSTi track to another audio track? Or do you still need to manually render out the VSTi and then import it back into a new audio track? That's the one thing I love the most since switching to Sonar...

Yup, sure is. AP6 is an excellent update from 5 IMO. Just bounces to a new track the looped & selected region.
I used to use it all the time back in my Acid days.
