Hi guys,

I actually have to cover a "USA-Smoothy-Ballad" production as close as possible. The original contains a synthbass in the refrain. It's a short squarewave bass with a light resonant enveloped filter. I already found the synth it was made with (Polysix from the Korg LC, with its very characteristic filter) and I could get it very similar, but the difference is, that in the original, it sounds a tick more old, smooth, analogish, distant (not reverbed!), smeary - whatever, hard to explain... the sound I created is a bit too close, clean, steril, harsh and cold. As if they mixed it with an old analog console, or sent it through a vintage gear.

I know there must be a way to get this and I wonder if it's possible with a plugin I don't know... I'm also quiet sure, that they worked with DAW like me, too. Only thing I can think of, is that they could have used a sample I don't have...

Unfortunately, I cannot post a sample here, because of copyright and non disclosure agreements.

What I already tried beside EQs is PSP MixSaturator and Camelphat. They both did a good job, but not enough. It always ends in a plastic sound instead of that organish original feeling...

So, does anybody has a hint for me?

Thanks a lot! :)

Ah, and also important: I'm working on Mac, with Logic7 and ProTools HD. So, no PC stuff, sorry...

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA!! First of all...WTF exactly is a
"USA-Smoothy-Ballad"?? I about wet myself when I read
that!! You say the original has a synthbass line
you're trying to copy. Well christ-on-a-crutch man why
not just give us the name of the damn song in question?? "USA-Smoothy-Ballad" A) does'nt
really tell us anything and B) is downright offensive
to us "USA-Smoothy-Ballad" boys!! :P I think I've finally
got a title for that new pop hit I've been working on:
"USA-Smoothy-Ballad" :hihi:

In any case.....if you just need it to sound,(god forgive me!),
"warmer" or "more analog" sounding try running it through
an ampsim or tube emulator.

Cheers......CL

Chance is they used the real thing - and if that is the case, you can try to get the plugin sound like it to the end of your days.
Seriously, a little more information on the track etc. would be great.

Hahaha, I knew it's a funny description, but I thought it might be clear at one shot for everyone what is meant with that...

At least, in europe :hihi:

OK, I try to describe the style again: typical Nineties pop ballade, with TR-808 Drums, Synth Bass, Nylon Guitars (Hans Zimmer...really), Pads, etc. think of Toni Braxton, George Michael, Michael Jackson, Madonna, ...

It's actually not a released song, that's why it wouldn't make sense to tell you the name of the song. And as I stated above, I'm also not allowed to.

But, however, it doesen't really matter, all I want to know is, if there's a plugin that can make a static plugin synth sound a little bit more organish, livly and warm analogish.

living sound, maybe you are right, so it's just not possible and I don't have to fool myself... and won't be laughed because of my stupid "try-to-say-what-I-mean" attempts... :)

Record the track to cassette tape, and bounce that back into the DAW: instant fat analog sound with tape compression and hiss! You must have access to an old deck somewhere...

You can ofcourse try out some guitar amp sims or something like VintageWarmer.

Ah....it's all clear to me now!! :D You might also try tape
echo emulators like Steinberg's Karlette or AO Tape Echo.
Or just straight up tape emulators like Steinie's Magneto.

Good idea to use a tape echo, but without a delay, I suppose? Just to isolate the tape effect? I will try this too, on monday, when I'm back in the studio. Thanks, you old Smoothy-Ballad-Boy! :)

I'd look at Scarbee's Vintage Keyboards FX. Other than that I think the HydraTone and Vintage Warmer suggestions are good, but I'd also recommend you look at HydraTone's stable mates ValveTone62 and ColorTone Pro.

Good Luck!

Aleksey has said he'll be porting some of his plugs to mac sometime, so it's not all bad news all of the time!
