I have tried Guitar Rig, Line 6 Vox, Boss, just about everything I know of, and I have never found a single distortion vst even that comes close to a $29 Digitech stomp from Guitar Center.

Not even close.

I'd even pay serious money for one if I could find it. So far, I think Helian free amp sounds best.

Please prove me wrong.

Digitech?? Their distortions s*ck!!

If you'd said
there isn't a decent emultion of tube amp you might have
been saying something. There are any number of distortion
fx and ampsims both hard and soft that sound way better
than anything digitech's made.

Of course, what exactly
constitutes "good tone" is highly subjective. If you like
your distortion to sound like a nest of angry bees in coke
can,(what I think of when I think of Digitech), then I
understand your frustration. I don't think any of the
companies involved in modeling are trying to capture
the Digitech sound.

Completely respectable stomp.

And no. I have never heard a VST come close.

it may be something magical about a brent averil mic pre going through a distressor into a maitek a/d in a hd3 system, but amp farm sounds pretty good in a mix

+1 on this. i just finished grabbing the modelpacks (had to save some months) and with metalshop it's a BEAST.

nuttin beats the saturation/pre amp combo on an old peavey

i get pretty close with my cheap ass little DIGITECH rp80

i don't know how you guys get 0 latency with line in anyway. effects i add to guitar are post record. i gotta have distortion real time

I have that Bad Monkey. Not bad for the price. Better than the POD XT distortion. Not as good as my Fulltone Fulldrive 2 and not as good as the distortion from my Mesa Stiletto Ace.
Just varying degrees of quality. I still think the POD XT does amp sims pretty good, but I find myself using sims less and less. It all depends on what you have.
You can run a good stomp in front of the POD and then use one of the cleaner sims so that you're not relying on the digital distortion.
Another option is to run the effects send from a tube amp into the POD XT and then use the XT sims instead of micing the amp.

Like I said, Bad Monkey is perfectly respectable. Particularly for 29 Bux.

As for the other methods, I have tried EVERYTHING. Pods, you name it. Yes you can get something acceptable by putting an outboard tube in front of your signal with a pod or a VST, but nothing really deeply satisfying.

It's like the difference between watching porn and making love with an analog, real time, beautiful woman...

Everything else I can do with a computer, but not an electric guitar signal.

Software has NEVER ACHIEVED Decent Guitar Distortion. Nope.
