I manage to get plenty of rain samples, but not that much in the way of thunder to post and it's been way too hot here over the last few days and that normally terminates in thunder and rain, I actually had a mic set up and managed to grab a quick snippet of rain and thunder. There was a few rumbles more but that pretty much was it - so we are now back to muggy and hot weather

This starts with a bit of rain then gentle distant rumble followed shortly by a distant crack and rumble then back to rain again.

Thank you snooky :D

This was a stereo mic recording (xy) - I love how thunder can move across the sky like that :D

Very nice sample! Excellent quality. Just wondering if you have a sample of an explosive thunder and lightning sound. Thanks...

Thanks DJ_Bach :D

About explosive thunderbolts, not at this time.

Good recording! What kind of microphone did you use?

Just yesterday I tried recording thunder with a Shure 58 (which is my only mic) but I'm not satisfied with the quality. It sounds small and cardboardlike... :? :(

Truly mind-boggling music! - New album out! - And a blog!

Thanks again, Spe3d :D . Here we had 35,8°C, northern Germany (so why did I move to the north) - and, what's better, 32° in my flat at midnight, and after 9 hours all windows open still 31° in the early morning :hihi: :hihi: :x :x :x . We heard a FAR AWAY thunder, but that was it, so like for othere here it's nice for me to listen to yours :) .

Sometimes there's some nightly quarrels of neighbours here, because some smart guys use to drown the whole quarter in techno-house-music 'til morning, and in some pause between two 4tothefloors I think I'll let your thunder go through my speakers as loud as I can :-)))))). I thought of recording the various shouts'n quarrels of the neighbours who get no sleep, but you get too much noise of the hundreds of air-conditioners that run 24 hours a day in big glass-houses of some companies :( . Still didn't find a way to get rid of that, not taking other sounds away.
So thanks for that, and let's hope it will cool down a little bit, at least so much that we could sleep in the night:)

Thank you gravehill :D

I use condenser microphones the reason being they are more sensitive with a broad frequency response - but its difficult recording the environment with them due to even the slightest of breezes affecting the recording, so a lot has to be done to protect the mic elements so the recordings are not ruined.

The stereo xy setup is what gives the sense of space, everything where it should be, thunder in the sky, rain hitting various surfaces at different heights to the left and right, with moment, there is quite a tonal range so even more important to protect the mics so that removal of frequencies can be kept to an absolute minimum. Often low cuts are used to take out environmental distortions like floor rumble, wind, distant traffic etc - not something that's wanted with a thunder recording so those distractions need to be eliminated before recording.

Dynamic microphones tend to be limited in frequency response and not as sensitive - good for high pressure level faily close recordings like some percussion, or massive machines etc.

Sounds like purgatory to me - all that heat and noise - in situations like that I have the mini breaks with the fridge door open :D , It certainly does not help when the external temperature gets as high as it does both at night and during the day - lucky for me over here the temps have gone back to a more normal value - particularly the night time, it will probably be heading your way in the near future I would think. :)

Thanks guys :D

This is a really beautiful sounding recording. Nice job man. Thanks also for the micing info. I'm kindof a microphone junkie these days. XY huh? Small diaphrams? Thanks again.
