What's the best way to use external MIDI controllers to control VSTis within FL Studio without having to set it up each and every time? I'd like to start a new project and have a quick and easy way to control my VSTis with my hardware controller. I've tried using templates before, but they are way too resource hungry and take forever to load. Is there an easier way to save the Link to Controller data and be able to bring it up on the fly?

Hardware VSTi Control in FL Studio

I have been using FL for 4 years now. What you first need to do is get a decent external Midi Controller. I use a BCF2000. Its an excelent peice of kit.

In order to create a template, you must save the .FLP you wish to use in the template folder located in "C:\Program Files\Image-Line\FL Studio 6\Data\Projects". This template should then be available in File -> Templates. FL should then load up this template as a default each time FL is run.

I have written a template for the BCF2000, which is fully functionable, and uses the dashboard as an interface between FL and The controller. (moving a fader on the BCF will move the dashboard fader, and moving the dashboard fader will move the fader motor on the BCF)

I like to have multiple instances of each instrument so that I have quick access if I want to use a certain VSTi for a pad as well as a bass in a song. The template I have set up now takes over 3 minutes to load (on an Athlon XP 2600+ with 1 GB RAM) which is quite an inspiration killer.

Thanks but I already know how to make templates. The problem is that the templates are too large now since I'd like to have control over most of my VSTis at the same time. Thanks though.

Whoa, 3 minutes?!
That sucks.
I've never found any way to link up my Photon to FL that's any faster than individually assigning controllers anyways. I don't need knob-control for mising, I use them for performing on VSTi and VSTs and it's not like I can just load 10 synths into a project template and use those - I use different ones for every song.

FL supposedly is even tricked out with a template for the Photon but it doesn't do anything that I notice.

I'll have to think on this and see if I can come up with a solution.

I normally end up using different ones for each song too but it's easier when they're all laid out and I don't have to add them in one by one. I also like having them linked to their own color-coded mixer channels for easy access- all 64 channels occupied with some VSTis unaccounted for to give you an idea where the 3 minute load time comes in.

I've been getting some help through the LoopTalk forum (first time for everything... :p) and I may be on track to getting it to work using the MIDI CCs- I'll keep you posted if you're interested in adapating it to your Photon. How is the Photon anyway? Had my eye on it for awhile.
