Anybody have any ideas for good whitenoise or static vst's, that I could put in an insert and would add it over the top of synths. I've tried some distortion plugs but I still haven't found what I'm after.

I guess more accuratley what I'm looking for is to get white noise in sync with the sound source, so it adds it to the sound source.

record a minute of an empty tape and normalize. put it in a audio track and play it (looped). Use a MIDI gate and trigger it with the same MIDI data as your sound source. mix the two tracks.

Tape noise is not loud enough. An FM radio inbetween stations (and stereo mute disabled) is loud enough.

Maybe you'd better ask for a VSTi synth with a noise generator. Triangle II has one: http://www.kvraudio.com/get/203.html

I said Normalize after recording, than it is loud enough. Tape noise sounds more organic than pure "mathematical" white noise as a synth can produce. But FM noise is also sufficent, but different. It's a question of personal taste.

I'm looking for stuff more along the lines of a vst synth where I could use the VST synth in an effect kinda like absynth. I'll check out triangle II but some other suggestions are appreciated. I can get noise I just want it to be synced with the source.

Are you talking about tuned noise? Then you need a tight band-pass filter, whose cutoff is modulated by some source (midi note-on perhaps)

Check your synth(s) cause lots of synths have an osc that can be set to noise. Seems likely you already have that somewhere and that might do ya. Or if you can load a waveform or have a sampler then you can record some noise as someone else suggested.

I like the noise in Zebra2 cause it has separate noise modules with white, pink, digital and crackles in mono or stereo and can be independently filtered and enveloped, modulated, gated, sync'ed to tempo etc. But that is a lot to spend just for noise when there are free options.

in ableton live there is a plug called erosion what kinda does what you are looking for.

also there is the convoluter by anarchy fx which turns every signal into noise (or sinewaves).
you can decide how many bands should be analyzed and how much the signal shall be turned into noise.

did that make sense?

Some synths, like Oatmeal, have a noise generator. I guess you could turn off the oscillators and just play the noise generator.
