Is there any easy way to convert samples in *.404 or *.202 format into the separate wav files contained in them other than importing into a sample editor as raw pcm files and going through the tedious process of cutting manually?

Hi,
I don't know if there are any converters for those. You could however use:
Waveknife - chops files up quicky into separate wavs
or
Chainer - to resample as wavs / soundfonts

No, you can't extract the raw audio data from a 202 or 404 file automatically. I'm not even entirely sure why you'd want to, unless you wanted to breach the sound designer's copyright.

Is that right? So, if I wanted to use some sounds from a 202 kit in a Reason Sampler / ReDrum for example are you saying I can't do that? Sorry if this has been gone over before - can I only use a SR202 patch in SR202 and I'm not allowed to resample etc?

Oops? What's with LM4-kits, or RM2-kits? They come as individual wave-files and I use them as I like - a Snare from this kit, a hihat from that. Is this against any copyrights???Muon Software Ltd wrote:I'm not even entirely sure why you'd want to, unless you wanted to breach the sound designer's copyright.

That all depends on the person who created the original patch. If there's no licensing documentation included with the patch, I would expect that you can do anything you want with it *except* re-distributing the file as your own work (which would breach even the most basic copyright).
However, some people are working on DS404 and SR202 sample libraries (us included). As with any sample CD you purchase, there will be licensing conditions and you will not be permitted to use those samples outside the terms of those conditions. Again, the conditions are up to the original sound designers.

OK, I understood. And concerning the DS-404 I feel no need to break up the file into separate samples. But with drums, it is basically different. The big disadvantage of SR-202 is that you're bound to a "set" of samples which you can't change easily. So I still have to keep my favourite samples as wave-files and are forced to create an individual kit for each song.
