One of the most stumping things in Ableton's announcement of Live 6 is the lack of vst hosting while rewired. The tedious task of rendering each track out for final engineering in Cubase (to avoid Live's characteristic summing engine) is wearing seriously thin on me, and I'm baffled as to why we aren't yet able to host vsti's while in rewire slave mode.

Am I missing some obvious financial/political/technical explanation as to why in this age of incredible technology we still can't do this?

Can anyone explain why this is not possible, fisable, or already done by companies such as Ableton. Are they defending some kind of intellectual property (or their pride as a completely adequate DAW solution)?

I'm really curious to know, as this is something I've been hanging out for, and I'd just love to know some of the backround behind why I will have to continue using such draining workarounds.

I have a feeling it has to do with some licensing agreement with Steinberg and/or Propellerheads.
Like if you have VST you must support ASIO or something to that effect.

I don't have any facts to back this up.It is only a theory of mine.

I see no technical reason it should'nt work.You're filling a buffer with float values.Wether another hosts reads it or your soundcard is as far as i know irrelevant.

well that sort of killed my interst in live - maybe see 6 - it would be a sketchpad for me and would ahve to link up to cubase to make much sense-

tried project 5 nearly bought it - just didnt like it enough

are there any other similair sketchpads (ps tried fruity too - not for me)

... just got a lot easier - in Live 6 you will be able to render seperate wav/aiff files for each track with a single clip (one of the hidden little features they've added)

I use EnergyXT as my sketchpad with ERA for MIDI patterns and Guru for drums. Phrazor will soon replace ERA completely for all MIDI duties.

eXT + Phrazor pre-order are 70 EUR and offer a wide range of working posibilities when combined. Phrazor is still in beta and XT2 should be out in the near future - so this combo is about to get better.

I'll admit this is a redeeming feature but it takes away the flexibility that would be afforded if it simply hosted the instuments. It seems to me like a no brainer- I just don't get what's so difficult about it, or why they wouldn't do that like, a version ago. Hence the poll.

I just dunno though, I'm not as hopelessly compelled to upgrade immediately as I have been in the past. I really think I might sit back and see how it all pans out.

I don't think I found a suitable answer in the poll (not even a fish option).
The given ones don't really make sense, even looked at from different perspectives.
Maybe it's the money argument, but they have this vst hosting code already done anyway (and in use, if not in rewire slave mode) ?

P5 definitely hosts VST(i)'s when in slave mode, as I have done this with it using Sonar as the master.

Indeed. In fact its that obvious that it does work that I just assumed j8 wasnt referring to kp when he said 'I wonder if hes tried it'

Why can't or wouldn't Rewire Slaves be able to host VST's?!?

Why do you think it hasn't been done?
