IMO, digital distortion just isn't as good as analog yet. So if you have a bunch of freeware distortion/saturation effects, you probably have as much range and quality as the expensive ones. People rave about Trash - I wasn't very impressed. PSP MixSaturator is my favorite VST saturator plugin. I just dislike PSP's marketing strategy. They force you buy a whole suit of stuff I don't want. And I know that they have given MixSaturator away for free with a magazine. So it annoys me to have to pay $100 for a bunch of stuff I don't want, to get something that thousands of people got free. Plus, PSP have embraced iLock or Pace or something, so I have no further interest in anything they make now.

Stick with the good guys like Voxengo.

Time for a shameless plug (excuse the pun!), you could give ShapeShifter a try..

Try the step-sequenced waveshaper on it to get distortion that changes character over time.. it can give really interesting tone changes that you don't get with a normal 'fixed' distortion effect.

There's another 6 effects on there as well so you can do lots more then just trashing/distorting your sound.

Thanks,
Alex

+1 for Metallurgy. Great effect, especially on beats. Crazy value for $20.

can anyone go into detail about what metallurgy does

Reason users can easily achieve similar effects to the fun gated distortion by taking a Matrix and grabbing the CVs, patching them into your instrument. Check the picture below to see a basic example. If I wanted to intensify this chain I would do the same thing to the Scream unit using the Matrix's CV gate and curve outs plugged into the Scream's Scale, P1, P2 or Damage Control input .

This is when Reason gets more fun.

Metallurgy's demo has the manual for it if you download it if I recall correctly.

Oh yeah Metallurgy - when I tried the demo at release time it was a superb effect. I have been putting off the purchase for a while now, too long. I'll probably buy it this week alongside Sonitex. :)
