hi,
i'm interested in using some vst effects on guitars and also on recorded tracks from my ADAT. i dont currently have a way to record strait to my computer. I transfer adat tracks to cd and them put them on the computer. I use vsthost for synths because its fairly simple and straitforward. what could i use to either run guitar through an effect or to run a recorded track through a compressor or eq vst? i'm lost, this is all new to me.

Definitely EnergyXT, most powerful while low-resource and flexible host for such a cheap price. Plus you'll get XT2 for the same price.

Depends on what "run a guitar through an effect" exactly means.
In principle, you can plug a guitar directly into a sound card's Line In connector, but the result will be ... well. Let' say "not so good". The simplest solution that most guitarists can apply, since they have the stuff anyway, is to put an effects device in the middle (Line6 Pod or whatever). Or use one of the neat modern USB sound devices that have a "Hi-Z" input, which is exactly for the the purpose of direct guitar input. Or, if the equipment is already there, connect the computer's sound card to an existing mixer. Or... well, "lots of possibilities", as I heard an old Judo master once say
Once you have that set up, VSTHost can be used to load an effect, or even a range of effects in various combinations, and run the guitar through it, then output the result. No need to pay a dime for eXT - at least not until your needs outgrow my simple host's capabilities.

Like stated, Minihost (Tobybear) and VSThost are great for that too. If you want to chain many effects (something I like to do with my guitar) hosts like EnergyXt are better, maybe. And the demo lets you actually do this, the only problem would be that you had to connect all the effects you like anew each time you start EnergyXT (www.xt-hq.com). The program lets you save your settings, but you cannot re-load them, you'd have to pay 39 Euro for that. It's the best 39 Euro you could spend, I'd say, but you don't need to if you're really on a budget.
For example I wanted to get some "techno-chord"-sound with my Guitar. So I tried some different delays, filters, and so on, all freebies (and great). Result was a funny sound after I just played a simple chord on my axe. For experimenting like this, EnergyXT is great too.
Concerning "getting the guitar into the PC" the former post has said much already. You could, if you got a preamp from Behringer or so, put your guitar into that too (instead of just your mic for singing) There are debates about the best way, a DI-box, a preamp, the audiocard with HiZ-settings, and you'd best experiment a bit or ask around, but the most important thing is not to connect the guitar straight into your soundcard if it has NO "HiZ"-setting. If you'd like to spend money for a vamp2 from Behringer or the Line6-stuff mentioned, you're done, they also include effects and ampsims.

It is very basic and simple so good to get started. And it's freeware.
In any case you should consider buying a cheap mixer as a Behringer UB 502 or something.
(There is also a good deal when buying a Tapco mixer: you got Tracktion 2 vst host sequencer, a great software with a great support here at KVR. I don't know about the hardware quality, but it's supposed to be good.)
