Hey, all. Ever since selling my wonderful Korg SDD3000 years ago (the insane eBay going price was just too tempting and I needed the rent money), I have been looking for a decent freeware VST/DX delay plugin that can use a square wave or generate a quality, slow moving random waveform to modulate delay time. The greater the on-tap delay time and available depth of modulation, the better. My latest deep search is still turning up nothing as best I can tell (although I'm finding lots of really cool if irrelevant stuff), and I'm thinking I might have to actually GASP learn SynthEdit to build what I need.

Before I go to that trouble, does anybody here know about something I don't?

Actually, I'm pretty sure that everybody knows something I don't, but... you know what I mean.

if you haven't already, try RetroDelay. even if it doesn't do exactly what you're looking for, it's a pretty nice freebie.

Thanks, y'all. The Kjaerhus I'd already looked at but it doesn't have the square wave and delay time is not quite long enough for the sort of particular freakiness I'm after (the SDD3000 had 1.3sec and it was just *barely* long enough for the particular trick I'm trying to pull). Retrodelay isn't quite there, either... but it should be very interesting, especially with the envelope follower-- maybe I can trick it into producing a square wave through some clever routing.

Closest thing to what I'm looking for commercially is the PSP Lexicon 42, which has basically everything I'm looking for... but that's $$$, and I'm a grad student.

Or go modular: a delay unit with "automation" of delay time sent to it by a seperate LFO set on square. Just combine basic building blocks to get what you want: midi effects controlling VST audio effects.

Or just control the delay time with VST automation.

One modulating delay (lfo) is in aciddose xhip fx pack:

Thanks again... The modular approach had occurred to me but I've yet to see a VST delay plugin with an LFO input or a standalone LFO that can be somehow routed into slider automation-- if you can suggest one or the other, please feel free to hit me up. I did make something similar in Csound eons ago.

I will check out Xhip's effects. I ran into some raves re: the synth here last night, guess I should see what the fuss is about.

Still haven't found a good sdd/tc delay yet! The Golden Modulator is very good though. It was somnething inherently special in the analgoyness of that unit. Check Roni by audiodamage though, they make great plugs:

Well if you ruled out the VST automation option (just automate the delay time, instead of using any LFO in between), here is a MIDI LFO plugin that you can route to any delay plugin that accepts MIDI control.

and, using energyxt, you can transform the cc into vst parameter data. energyxt also has it's own vector modulation.

I think TOne2 FIlterbank2 can do what you want to do.
Not freeware, but maybe also that the old no-gui/less-features version can do it ?
