Plugin effects only work in midi not audio- Cubase sx3

I dont get it. When I use a compressor or Native instruments Guitar Rig as an insert on my midi piano track, no problem but when I swith to an audio track, those same effects plugins don't work with no input sinal whatsoever.
What is going on? I haven't the slightest idea.
